Gallops Mile and a Half in 2:14%— Easter Stockings Timed in 2:28% Over Mile and Three-Eighths. • LATONIA, Ky„ June 21. — Toro, the American Derby winner and Latonia Derby can- didate of E. B. McLean, displayed brilliant form this morning in his final workout for , the race to be run at the Covington track Saturday. Trainer John F. Schorr elected I to gallop the son of The Porter — Brocatelle over the Latonia Derby distance of one mile and a half and, with E. Ambrose in the saddle, he nogotiated the long route in 2:44%, running easily at every stage. He galloped over the heavy footing with smooth, firm strides that indicated a keen fancy for the i track and came out of the workout in splendid condition. Ambrose sent him over the first quarter in G/s ; the half mile, in :52 ; three-quarters, in 1:19%; the mile, in l:47Vs. and one mile and one-quarter, in 2:15%. Phil Beuters Galahad, in preparation for a more exacting workout tomorrow, was galloped three-eighths in :44 this morning. : He was under strong restraint, and the workout was little more than sufficient to limber the German-bred gelding. Owner-trainer Reuter is expected here from Fair-mount Park in time to oversee his final gallop for Saturdays race. Shortly before the running *of the first race today, trainer Kay Spence had out the Audley Farms sterling filly Easter Stockings to work over a distance of one mile and three-eighths. The daughter of Sir Barton, never a willing worker, was accompanied by Drone for the seven-eighths and was caught in 2:28% for the entire distance. She ran in such fashion as to further indicate her readiness for what might prove the best racing of her career. She was galloped an additional eighth, to 1 complete the Derby route in 2 :45, pulling up, thus adding additional lustre to her gallop. Fractional time for the trial was: :26, :52, 1:19%, 1:47, 2:15, 2:28% and 2:45. Friday morning, the same stables Boba- shela, also an intended Derby starter, is due to reach here from Fairmount Park. He will be accompanied by the horse Chancellor and will be saddled for the Derby by Spence. LIGHT EXERCISE FOR MISSTEP. Misstep was given light exercise on the ! heavy course at an early hour this morning : and will have his final gallop Friday. Despite the unfavorable weather here-L • abouts, interest in the Derby renewal is un-5 ■ usually keen and widespread, and officials of the Latonia Jockey Club are confident t that, with a better break in the weather, , the race will attract an enormous attendance s and prove an excellent contest under any conditions. Johnny Daniels, trainer of the Latonia l division of the H. P. Headley stable, expects 3 to dispose of a number of horses in his 3 charge before the close of the meeting, Col. M. J. Winn, president of the American 1 Turf Association and executive director of the Latonia Jockey Club, returned from Chicago " this morning. He expressed confidence in the outlook for an unusually successful 1 meeting at Lincoln Fields this month, and 1 announced that the numerous improvements at that plant have been completed. These include a number of centerfield lakes, im-1 provements to the grandstand and clubhouse and spreading of thirty cars of new soil on the race course. Colonel Winn joined his associates here in the belief that, if fair weather prevails Sat- urday, on which the Latonia is renewed, it will be one of the most successful days in the history of the track.
