GOLD MINTS THIRD VICTORY ♦ Day of Unexpected Results at Collins ville Course. » ■ Pollard Harer Defeats Well-Backed Mokncs In QrlBD A Gerley Purse — Irfancli Gcoro i la Fourth llac?. »— COLLINSVILLE, 111., June 23.— A day of surprising and unexpected results in the racing occurred at Fairmount Park today, calculations being greatly upset in most of the races when the favorKes fared poorly and accounted for very little of the monetary awards. Overhead conditions were ideal, pleasant summer weather being the rule, while the track was fast and bordered on the best possible condition. What was intended as the feature attraction was offered as the fifth race and was named the Grimm and Gorley Purse. The main race attracted eight starters over the three-quarLero distance, bringing out a good band of sprinters. Mrs. R. Pollards Gold Mint furnished another big surprise when he wa i winner from the well-backed Meknes, Gold Mint proving slightly best and scoring by a neck at the end of a long, hard stretch drive. Meknes raced in the colors of P. Reuter and was a safe margin in advance of Mrs. O. Chaneys Flying Torch. Meknes was an overwhelming favorite and went to the post at odds-on. He ran a good race and made a strong bid for honors in the stretch, but was not quite good enough for Gold Mint, even after racing into a slight lead in the last eighth. Gold Mint came again at the end of the race and Meknes was unable to withstand his final challenge and had to be content with saving second place. It was Gold Minfs third victory during the present meeting. C. II. Trotter landed his first winner of the meeting when the three-year-old Turn Over graduated into the winners ranks in the race that opened the sport. The Wo.f-ville Stables Idealia, a pronounced favorite, secured second place and finished faster than the winn t. C Irbys Nodding was the one that took the third end of the purse. Twelve maiden three-year-olds and over matched strides and the winner was a big surprise. Jockey T. Murray scored his first winner here when he rode Turn Over. The early pace was set by Brumina, while Turn Over was right in the latters wake on the outside. King High and Joe Adams were also forward factors to the stretch turn. At this time Brumina tired and began falling back, while Turn Over moved past her into the lead. King High and Joe Adams were done also and it was then that Idealia and Nodding began to gain on the leaders with strong challenges. Turn Over drew into a clear lead near the last eighth, but suddenly began to swerve and was lucky in lasting to outflnish Idealia. SAMBO G. A SURPRISE. Another surprise resulted in the second race, when F. K. Brysons two-year-old colt Sambo G. finally made good with a victory over a shifty band of youngsters and also graduated into the winning class. Sambo G. just got up to defeat R. S. Clarks Cleanser in the final few yards. The Oakland Stables Susie Pal took the minor award, rounding out a complete shutout of the choices in this race, all three of the placed ones being outsiders. J. C. Milams Charming Lady was the offending favorite when she quit completely in the stretch racing. Cleanser at once raced into the lead, but was forced along by Charming Lady, she also showing much early speed, and the pair of them dominated things to the stretch. Sambo G. raced next in order, but within striking distance, while Susie Pal and Volsel followed closely. Cleanser raced Charming Lady into defeat in the stretch and the latter quit badly. Sambo G. was calli d upon for his best and when urged hard by jockey L. Morris succeeded in finding room on the inside and with a strong final challenge just got up in the final stages to vanquish Cleanser Jdv a head margin. The Missouri Stable landed another winner when Foretold furnished another upset in the mile and a sixteenth third race. Foretold landed in advance of E. E. Watsons Hourniore, with Ford Valentine in third place. Eleven started in this race and C. Irbys Battle Field carried the most support, but failed to race up to expectations, racing sluggishly most of the way and finally tiring badly when urged hard in the later stages of the race. Ijord Valentine moved into command right after the start and Loyal H. elected to force .the pace dangerously, the pair of them drawing far into the lead, opening a big gap before the others, of which Hourmore. First Pick and Battle Field were the prominent factors. Foretold was racing along easily in sixth position on the back stretch. On moving into the stretch Hourmore cut down the gap between himself and the leaders, passing Loyal EL at once and offered a strong challenge to Lord Valentine. IX ri.nniFic FINISH. At this point Foretold also made his move and, coming up fast, was racing right in the wake of the leaders near the last eighth. Loyal H. quit and it narrowed down to a three-horse struggle. Foretold, under hard riding, gradually wore down Lord Valentine and Hourmore, getting up in the final few yards to score by half a length margin at the end Hourmore finally succeeded in downing Lord Valentine and passed the latter in the last strides. Irfaneh was an easy winner of the fourth race and Malcolm, under J. J. McTague, landed in second place, with Marabou finishing third. Incidentally, Irfaneh was the first favorite to register a victory during the first four races. Malcolm acted badly at the post, lunging about and trying repeatedly to run off. He showed a decided disinclination to enter any of the stalls in the Waite starting machine and was finally forced into the machine an 1 held there and, luckily, go away to a fairly good start. Irfaneh showed the most speed and set the puce all the way, holding Malcolm safe at every stage. In the general closing up of the others at the stretch turn Malcolm was bumped badly and commenced tiring, but came gamely again in the final sixteenth and got up to outvalue Marabou in I I the final few yaids.
