UPSET AT ARLINGTON » Ethel Sherlock Surprises by Capturing Purse in Feature Race. ♦ More Rain Affects Track and Program — Western Owners in the Limelight During Day. • ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, 111.. June 2S.— Alderman John J. Coughlins Ethol Sherlock, lightly weighted and ri lden by the diminutive L. Jones, scampered home in advance of six other platers in the fifth race, regarded as the stellar offering on Arlington Parks program, and by her victory furnished a surprise, for she was but lightly regarded by the spectators, who backed Frances Rock. The latter finished in third place, being beaten for second place by Roycrofter. Ethel Sherlock proved at home in the sticky mud that comprised the track here. She raced in close attendance on the early leaders, took command when they tired and in the stretch had the purse safe. Roycrofter and Frances Rock fought it out in the early stages of the stretch for second place, but the favorite gave way as a result of poor riding. Jt marked the first victory that L. Jones had scored in his riding career. He hails from New Orleans and is a brother of D. Jones, a one-time skillful rider, who met injury while in the employ of E. R. Bradley. More rain caused the tracks to revert to their former bad shape. An absence of the better grade of horses was the result and the sport was of a routine order, with little to enthuse over. Considering the threatening weather and the severe track it was surprising that a big crowd was on hand. LAST TRIUMPH. The far West scored heavily when Paula Shay made a runaway race of the fourth. Cleo-Dale, Joe Junior and others were extensively backed here, but the running found them far out of it, whereas Paula Shay raced into a commanding lead after half a mile and won with great ease from Majoe, with National Brick up in the last stride to annex third place from Donna Santa. The favorite followers were jolted hard in the opener when Poison annexed the initial dash in handy style from Metronome and Sweet Money, the latter a pronounced choice. Poison was always a strong contender and. disposing of Metronome when straightened lor the stretch, won well in hand. Metronome seemed done after reaching the last sixteenth, but weak handling on the part of the rider of Sweet Money caused her to succumb in the last stride for second plae. after she seemed certain of that portion of the purse. Samaron, expected to be a strong factor in the race, was badly outrun. The followers of form fared better in th = second race when Sanction was an easy winner. He led by a wide margin from the start and never left the result seriously in doubt. Hal Side Guy. coming : trongly through the stretch, got into second place and stayed there, beating Little Guinea handily. Shasta Belle retired after racing half a mile, and Go Away did not figure to any great extent. EYIH.YN L. FINALLY WINS. C. H. Knebelkamp succeeded in landing a. purse when his Evelyn L. was home in advance of the others in the third race. She was backed into favoritism and under good riding raced into the lead in the stretch and held Mary Seth saf- in the final eighth. Mary Seth, though tiring fast in the last eighth, had secured enough advantage to enable her to retain second place from the fast-finishing Cap Dale. Xray figured prominently in the early running, but when she got in close quarters before reaching the stretch Philpot eased her back and this eliminated her. Hand Or. which in a preceding start ran away before the start, was under control this afternoon and the start found him away With the others on even terms. lie sprinted quickly into the lead and led the others home to win well in hand from Empty Glass, with Shasta Plum third. Hand Or was a slight favorite. Jockey Woolfe completed a triple victory for the afternoon when he brought home Wonderful in advance of Jim Bridger in the final race. Wonderful, the favorite, led for the entire distance and held Jim Bridger safe at all stages. The remainder of the field were beaten off, with Morocco getting up right at the end to outstay Larapin for third place. *
