ESPiNOZA STAKE WINNER 4 Rosedale Stable Representative Scores in Easy Fashion. ♦ Fly Light Second and Wcstovers Ibby Third — Coekrill in Startling Form Reversal. « NEW YORK. N. T. June 23.— For a feature at the Queens County Jockey Club track today the Woodhaven Claiming Stakes for two-year-olds, over five-eighths, wai offered. It was worth ,850 to the winnet and went to Espinoza, from the Rosedal« Stable, which led home the Sage Stables Fly Light, while P. H. Faulconers Westoveri Ibby saved third place from Jefferson Livingstons Autumn Bloom. Delightful weather attracted a big crowd and. while the program did not attract any of the real stars, it was interesting sport In the Woodhaven Stakes, Espjnoza, beginning well, dominated the running throughou! and still had something left at the end. FIj Light had saved ground on the inside and always was in a good position, but could not seriously threaten the winner. Westoveri Ibby finished with excellent courage furthei out on the course. Before this running, Grey Chief was purchased from the Rancocas Stable by Willi* McCabe, whoso silks are new to the turf. The son of Grey Lag did not prove much ol a buy as far as this first effort was concerned, for he finished last. That is not th« only McCabe starter that was disgraced, in the opening contest the race run by CockriU was so far below the previous form of thai plater that the running should surely call for an official investigation. F. M. Barlows Gracious Gift, which hai made most of his reputation as a sprinter, stuck it out for the mile and a sixteenth ol the opening race, to show the way homa Samuel Ross Verdi was the only one t« give the semblance of a contest and Grand Bey finished a distant fourth, while CockriU starting for Willie McCabe, who recentlj came to racing, ran a disgraceful race and pounds below his true form. It did not fil in with the recent form of this horse, which was a cantering winner on the occasion ol his last previous start. 3IARSHALL FIELDS VICTORY. The steeplechase of the day was over tha short course, for maidens, and it resulted in Marshall Fields Royal Charge, well ridden by Jeffcott, being winner over Gold Knight, from the Greentree Stable, with Captain Kidd* racing, for the B. B. Stable, finishing third. Fairy Lore, the Bob Smith starter, caused no end of excitement before the start when he got away from Dawson and ran in circles about the field until he was finally caught by "Red Coat" Murray and returned to the post. Then at the first fence Ceremonial, cne of the pair carrying the Dorwood Stable silks, unseated Pinon. Father Holt, showing altogether new speed over any of his previous races, went out to set the pace, but Joseph E. Davis Kathleen Crosby went with him and so improved on the pace that he dropped back slightly, but he was being badly messed about by Harra-way and was still rank and wanting to run. The others were being rated along at a steadier pace. Kathleen Crosby continued to show the way into the back field and there both Bold Knight and Royal Charge began to move up. Father Holt was still close up in the running, but it was apparent that he was doing his bert. Mendoza, for an instant, was going well, but it was only for an instant and, when the top the field was reached, the pair sent to the post by Matt Brady — Royal Charge and Kathleen Crosby — were racing first and second. Bold Knight was close at hand, but he was the only cne offering- serious contention. Two fences from home Kathleen Crosby made a bad landing and Thorndyke only regained his seat in the saddle by a bit of circus riding. By that time it was Royal Charge and Bold Knight that were fighting it out. They were close together over the last fence, but in the run home Royal Charge proved the better to be winner by three lengths. Captain Kidd was third, a dozen lengths further back, and the others came along in strung-out order. f EASY TRIU3IPII FOR LACE. Lace, from the Mendham Stable, scored an easy victory in the seven-eighths mile race for three-year-old fillies. She led home Snobbish, which raced for Miss Peggy Bailey, and Daunt, the starter from the Rancocas Stable, pulled up in third race before Louise. The only other starter was Clairdine. From a good start Louise dashed into the lead, but she did not last long when she surrendered to Lace. Daunt was racing in second place but she kept swerving and Fator had no end of trouble keeping her straight. Through the stretch Loco had only to gallop along to hold her advantago, while an eighth out Snobbish readily disposed of Daunt. Then when Fator found that Daunt was soundly beaten he eased her up and she was beaten six lengths for second place and only a length and a half before Louise. Frederick Johnsons Brown Elf proved easily best of the fillies which started in the five-eighths fifth race. Beginning fast, she dashed away into a long lead and it was no contest. Bravery, from the Sage Stable, took second place and third went to The Blonde, racing for II. P. Whitney. In this race Virmar was crowded about after the start and knocked back badly. She was forced to race on the outside thereafter and never reached a contending position. Under the perfect ride by Johnny Maiben, Walter J. Salmons Devonshire was winner ot tho one mile Old Rosebud Claiming Handicap from Caroler, from the Rosedale Stable, and Gerfalcon, racing for William Ziegler, Jr. Maiben was away slowly with Devonshire, made up ground gradually and coming to tho outside in the stretch was going away at the end. At private terms W. McCabe today purchased from the Rancocas Stable the two-year-old Grey Chief. F. Vesey claimed Gracious Gift, winner of the first race, from F. W. Barlow for ,000. John Sanford of Amsterdam, N. Y., was a club house visitor of the day. At private terms John E. Madden yesterday put chased from R. B. Strassburger the imported Tourvilla. At a meeting of The Jockey Club held yesterday Theodore Knapp was elected to • membership in The Jockey Club.
