REIGH COUNTS GREAT RACE » All England Excited Over Yankee Champions Victory. ♦ Trying to Secure Joe Child to Bide Hertz Colt in Ascot Gold Cup — "Chick" Lang Returns Home. 9 SPECIAL. CABLEGRAM. XONDON, England, June 7. — The latest news in connection with Reigh Count, the four-year-old American tnoroughbred which won the Coronation Cup at Epsom yesterday, is as follows : His racing career will end on June 20 when he competes in the Ascot Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. He will be shipped to the United States about June 29. "Chick" Lang, the American jockey, who came here to ride Reigh Count, sailed for home today. Joe Childs, the kings jockey, who piloted Reigh Count to victory in the Coronation Cup, is endeavoring to obtain his release from a previous contract in order to ride the American colt at Ascot. Today English racing circles are still discussing the triumph of the American invader. Reigh Counts soul stirring finish, in which he turned the tables on Athford by a short head, will never be forgotten. The performance of the son of Sunreigh and Contessina overshadowed interest in the Epsom Oaks, one of Englands great turf classics, which was run today. The renewal of the Coronation Cup was a great thing for racing in this country, and international turf relations. Reigh Counts victory in the Coronation Cup was the signal for a demonstration more vociferous than that which followed Trigos triumph in the Derby the day before. Never was a result more heartily cheered, or more popular. Princess Mary, who viewed the race from the royal box, sent for Mrs. John D. Hertz and congratulated her upon the victory of her colt. The American sportswoman was greatly touched by Princess Marys kindly interest. As ladies are not permitted in the unsaddling enclosure, Lords Lonsdale and Hamilton of Dalzell, of the English Jockey Club and stewards at Epsom Downs especially sought out Mrs. Hertz to congratulate her. The one untoward incident was Reish Counts swerving toward Plantago in the final stages of the race. According to the London Times, the winner interfered with Plantago, ruining whatever chance that colt Continued on twenty-firet page. "The rules of racing are clear on this point," said the London Times, "and the stewards had the power to disqualify the winner without any objection being laid, as they did on one historic occasion on this very course. They decided to do nothing in this case, however, and all is well that ends well." Trainer Bert Mitchell today reiterated that Reigh Counts last appearance in competition will be the Ascot Gold Cup. "The colt will be returned to America to enter the stud, being shipped r.bout ten days after the Gold Cup," said Mitchell. "We will send him by a fast steamer. He will be transferred immediately from New York to Chicago to be paraded and exhibited at Arlington Park. The meeting at that track opens July 1 and runs to August 2. Before we came here, Mr. Hertz planned to make this English campaign Reigh Counts last competitive venture." Trainer Mitchell was not overlooked in the general round of congratulations. R. C. Dawson, trainer of Athford, was among the first to felicitate his happy fellow-horseman. The American sent a wonderfully fit horse to the post. Reigh Counts rider in the Ascot Gold Cup has not been decided upon. Every effort is being made to give Joe Childs the mount again, but he is promised to ride Invershin in the classic for J. Reid Walker. Childs is endeavoring to obtain his release, as he is desirous of piloting the invader. Childs rode the race of his life in the Coronation Cup. He said after the race that he was almost unseated at the start by Reigh Counts impetuous break. The colt came down hill in the latter stages of the race with a rush that carried him from last to four place within a short distance. The spectators never saw faster or gamer running, or a more gallant finish when Reigh Count won in the last two strides. Jockey Lang sails on the S. S. Minnetonka from here today. He was unable to do justice to the colt under English conditions. He also is putting on weight rapidly.
