AMERCAN DERBY OUTLOOK I ♦ Field to Include Winners of Other I Noted Three-Year-Old Prizes. Brief Review of Stake Successes of Several Prominent Candidates for Washington. Parks Big Race. 1 Barring mishaps and changes in the plans of owners, the most representative field of three-year-olds that has gone to the post in any stake this year will face the barrier in the American Derby, which will be decided at Washington Park June 15. It appears most probable at this time that the renewal of this race as a Washington Park fixture will bring together the winners of the Tijuana Derby, Preakness Stakes, Chesapeake Stakes, Kentucky Derby, Fairmount Derby, Withers Stakes and possibly the winner and some prominent contenders in the Belmont Stakes. These include, likewise, the winners of several of the greatest juvenile staks of 1928. Below is a brief record of some of the stake performances of the most prominent probable starters in the American. Others will appear in later issues : CLYDE VAN DUSEN. H. P. Gardner. Greatest interest will attend his start in the American Derby because of his triumph In the Kentucky Deroy, but this does not necessarily mean that Clyde Van Dusen will be the publics choice. Much depends upon track conditions. The Kentucky Derby was run in a downpour and on a track deep in mud. The highlights of his racing record follow : PRINCIPAL STAKES AS 2-YEAR-OLD. Idle Hour Stakes Won. ,890. American National Futurity Second. ,000. Orphanage Stakes Won. ,925. Breeders* Futurity Third. ,078. Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes Won. 2.-800. PRINCIPAL STAKES AS 3-YEAR-OLD. Kentucky Derby Won. 3,950. Grainger Memorial Handicap Third. 11,000. KARL EITEL. J. J. Coughlin. Karl Eitel, playing "second fiddle" to his ■table companion. NAISHAPUR Wilshire Stable He has been one of the most spectacular performers in the three-year-old division, a eolt which soared nearly to the heights in the Kentucky Derby and later, when made an odds-on favorite in the Fairmount Derby, failed ignominiously. There were many who really believed him to have been the best in the Kentucky Derby, when he ran second to Clyde Van Dusen.
