RESURFACE LATONIA TRACK Plans Under Way to Transport a Sandy Loam to Improve Covington Course. CINCINNATI, Ohio, March 31. Col. M. J. Winn, president of the American Turf Association, arrived fn the city a few days ago on a" tour of the race courses under his direction Latonia, Churchill Downs, Washington Park and Lincoln Fields. He will expend over 00,000 in improvements at the various plants. He was accompanied by Tom Young, architect and engineer. The immediate concern is to remedy the condition of the track at Latonia, which, last year, owing to nearly thirty days of continuous wet weather, proved unsatisfactory to the horsemen and an annoyance to the racing public, which found it nearly impossible to pick winners in the deep going that prevailed throughout the meeting. It has been decided that the Latonia track must be resurfaced with fresh live loam and be regraded and practically rebuilt throughout It seems that there is a peculiar- sandy loam in the vicinity of Louisville that rejuvenates old race tracks and gives them new life and vigor. Many tons of this soil will be brought to Latonia and the work of resurfacing and rebuilding the course will be begun at once. At Louisville, contracts were let for two new barns, an improvement that is necessary to accommodate the unusual number of thoroughbreds that are coming to Churchill Downs from all over the country for the spring rrieeting. Other improvements are contemplated that will beautify Churchill Downs and add to the comfort of the throngs that are sure to make this Derby day one of the greatest in the history of this famous course.
