i J . i LULL IN DERBY WORKOUTS Fiddler Displays Speed in Gallop Over Three-Quarters. Lexington Course Crowded During Training Hours Ready to Begin Schooling Juveniles. LENINGTON, Ky., March 31. There was a lull in workouts, as far as Kentucky Derby candidates were concerned, at the Kentucky Association track here this morning, although other horses were sent through their paces with sets beginning from almost every post until 10 oclock in the morning. . The most impressive workout turned in by a Derby eligible was the three-quarters of a mile in 1:16 by Fiddler, Gallaher and Combs three-year-old which showed such remarkable speed in his races last year. Working with James M., a three-year-old stablemate, Fiddler was timed the first quarter in :25s, half mile in :50 and five-eighths in 1:03. It was the best move which Fiddler had turned in this season and showed that trainer Sewell S. Combs has the colt on edge for his engagements this year. Ray Blades, the chestnut son of Spanish Prince II. Yaselda, which T. P. Hayes is training for W. S. Dudley, was sent three-quarters of a mile, being timed in 1:20. Beginning from the three-quarter post, he went the first quarter in 126, half in :52 and five-eighths in 1 :06, the colt was not extended at any stage of the journey and pulled up in good shape. Racketeer and Ashtabula galloped five furlongs again this morning, going the distance in 1:06. The fractions were :2675, :393 and :52. Trainer Walter Grater says these two. Derby eligibles are training nicely for their engagements. Racketeer seems above the ordinary, being a good looking horse and one with exceptional speed. Lady Fingers, Sis Agnes and Red Rider, the "filly candidates for the various Oaks races in Kentucky this year, ran six furlongs in 1 :18, going the quarter in :25 and the half in :50. Lady Fingers- appears ready to race. Gold Step, C. W. Moores Derby eligible, was sent three-eighths of a mile this morning, being timed the distance in :39. He worked with Night Cry, a three-year-old colt in the Moore barn. Trainer Jack Baker who is training one of the largest stables of horses on the track, had the majority of his horses out for gallops. Hieover worked with the Kentucky Derby winner, Whiskery. The pair went three-quarters in 1 :21. Baffling Star. Derby candidate, and Law-ley, which is being prepared for the handicap races this year, were sent a half mile by trainer O. A. Bianchi, the two being timed in 51. seconds. Busy was out for a long gallop as was Continued on third page. LULL IN DERBY WORKOUTS Continued from first page. Dedicate, these horses probably will indulge in their regular workouts Tuesday morning. Several two-year-olds were sent through their paces this morning, three black colts belonging to C C. Van Meter taking the limelight. Black Comet, a black colt by Westy Hogan Comet Oday, turned in a sensational half mile work, being timed in :21, :36 and :50. Fudge, a son of Lee O. Cotner, and External, a two-year-old by Noctural, were timed together in :37t3, although External had much trouble keeping up i with his running mate. Red Gilmore, assistant starter to "William Hamilton, arrived from New Orleans Sunday, and took up his task of helping Ruby White school the hundreds of two-year-olds quartered at the local track. Miserable weather conditions militated against the juvenile school last week, although the assistant starters expect to have their hands full this week. As yet no two-year-olds have been schooled from the barrier, but it is expected that this will be the order of things in a very few days. S. J. Kelly got in from New Orleans bringing his horses, including Tea Green and Little Colonel, with him. J. C. Gillem, who last year trained for himself, has taken over the job of training the horses owned by W. E. Hupp, Lexington, and has seven in training, five two-year-olds and two older horses. The older horses are Spot Light and Pin On, and Spot Light especially is training better than ever. Mr. Hupp owns five two-year-olds, two by Bubbling Over, one by High Noon and an- other by Westy Hogan, and the majority look and act well. The names and breeding of the youngsters follow: Bobs Play, ch. c, by My Play Bobby ; Bubola, ch. f, by Bubbling Over Mazola ; Bubble On. ch. f. by Bubbling Over Photo ; Mary Cobb, ch. f, by High Noon Auntie May. Westy Broom, br. f, by Westy Hogan Broom Dance. W. V. Reeves announced that he had sold the contract on his son, Bobby Reeves, a promising apprentice rider, to J. M. Hudkill, local racer, and that the boy would get into the saddle during the impending spring meeting at Lexington.
