TESTS TO DETERMINE BEST Winns Mind Open on Respective Merits of Bahr and Waite Starting Gates. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 5. According to information received here. Col. M. J. Winn, directing head of the Churchill Downs, Washington Park, Latonia and Lincoln Fields tracks, has an open mind as to which of the various starting gates in service is the most practical, and is hopeful that further tests of the Bahr gate at Washington Park, and Waite device here, at Churchill Downs and Fairmount Park, will afford more definite estimates of the merits of each. It is understood that Colonel Winn will give generously of his time in witnessing the operation of the two machines with a view of ascertaining which, if either, of the successful gates is the most efficient and popular with horsemen and enthusiasts. If impending tests reveal one superior and more popular than the other, Colonel Winn will add the most successful to the equipment at Latonia for the coming summer meeting at that track. William Hamilton, recently reappointed as starter at all Kentucky tracks, has been assuredxone of the Waite machines in time to school horses lvefore the opening of the local meeting on April 17, and another is promised for Churchill Downs within a few weeks.
