PENNANT LASS SCORES Makes Amends for Recent Defeats at Bowie Course, a 4 Completes Double for Trainee. Odom and Jockey Thurber by Winning Feature Race. ; -N-v BOWIE, Md., April S. A. W. Wentzels good filly Pennant Lass wiped out her recent defeat by Dinah Did Upset when she was winner of the Midway Handicap, over three-quarters. The daughter of Pennant led home M. Sterns gelding Gun Royal, with Star o Morn, from the Black Dot Stable, finishing a distant third. The time for the distance, 1:12, was remarkably fast, considering track conditions. The return of near winter weather this afternoon, with a few flurries of snow during the forenoon, had an effect on the attendance, but the Bowie crowd is a hardy one and it was surprisingly large under the conditions. The victory of Pennant Lass in the Midway Handicap marked up a double for Bob Odom, who saddled the filly, and Thurber, who did the riding. In the opening race the double was begun by the victory of Robert Gerrys Foolhardy. Only four went to the post for the feature race, but it really was a two-horse race when the other two were Star o Morn and War Instigator. There was no time that either one of them threatened, but Gun Royal made the race interesting. Pennant Lass was in a running mood and Thurber at once sent her into the lead at the rise of the barrier. Gun Royal was right after her and the other two were quickly outrun. This order was maintained throughout. Gun Royal was never far back of the Wentzel filly, but right to the end he raced at her heels and she was apparently doing her best as she passed the finish. Star o Morn, which always had more speed than War Instigator, finished four lengths back of Gun Royal. H. P. WHITNEY SILKS. The second best field of the day went to the post in the Fads and Fancies Purse, for fillies and mares. This brought victory to H. P. Whitneys silks when Rueful was an easy winner over Zublena, from the Rancocas Stable, while F. Sansones Black Patricia beat Mrs. A. E. Van Rees Stupendous for third. As the race was run, Steffen, who had the mount on Zublena, did not add anything to - his reputation. He had Zublena under restraint until well into the stretch, permitted Watters to come through on the inside with Rueful and his finish on the daughter of Zev was weak. Frona good start, Zublena and Chattering went out to set the pace, but the Rancocas filly was under restraint and it was apparent that she could draw away at the first asking. Steffen, instead of paying attention to his own mount, for some unaccountable reason was watching the filly that was alongside. Had he gone on about his business with the daughter of Zev the result could surely have not been any worse. Going to the stretch turn Chattering began to tire, while Black Patricia moved up on the outside. There Steffen swung wider than was necessary and Rueful, which had been saving ground next to the rail, moved up resolutely. She seemed to be past before Steffen woke up and when he did Zublena was coming again, but the harm had been done and the Whitney filly was a comparatively easy winner when she scored by something more than a length. Black Patricia was beaten three-quarters of a length for second place and Stupendous led home the tired Chattering. FOOLHARDY GRADUATES. Robert L. Gerrys Foolhardy, after many failures during the Florida season, graduated from the maiden class in the opening race for plater maiden juveniles. At the end he was doing his best to beat B. ORandoIphs Noisy Miss, by a-neck and Mrs. J. H. Busch-ers Zirin was third, a length before E. K. Brysons My Sweets. In this race there was a fall when Plaster Cast stumbled and unseated Leyland shortly after the start. Foolhardy was the one to force the pace and Thurber saved ground with him all the way. Noisy Miss, at all times raced in second place and My Sweets, after going along third, tired right at the end t,o surrender that position to Zinn. Fortunately, Leyland escaped injury in his fall. There was a good finish in the race for three-year-old platers that was run as the second. This saw J. M. Collins Easter getting up in the final strides to lead home Columbus, from the Rancocas Stable, with Y. W. Manns Mutual Friend outrunning Sun-view for third. It was a good start, and Sunview and Guilder raced away to set the pace. They went along well lapped and clear of the others, and Mutual Friend was in third place, while Columbus was close at hand. Sunview Continued on sixteenth page. PENNANT LASS SCORES Continued from first page. and Guilder continued to show the way to the head of the stretch, but both were beginning to tire when turning into the stretch and there was a general closing up back of them. Columbus was making what looked like a winning move and at the sixteenth post he looked the winner, but Easter had gone to the outside and, finishing with gameness, got up to drop her head down in front. Columbus was a length aiid a half before Mutual Friend, which readily led home Sunview by a like distance, and Theo. Rochester, after having run into ho end of trouble in the stretch, was a fast-finishing fifth.
