McCREERY IN NEW YORK Brings Howe and Sewickley Strings From Aiken, S. C. Double lay 3Iain Reliance in Cup Races This Year Gold IJrook Derby Eligible. NEW YORK, N. Y., April 8. Thomas H. McCreery, who wintered at Aiken, S. C, arrived at Belmont Park with the horses owned by the Richard Howe and the Sewickley Stables. J. F. Byers, who selected the Sewickley Stable name, is an enthusiastic steeplechase follower, while Mr. Howe prefers flat racing. The combined stable numbers thirty-one head, of which the Howe stable houses nineteen. These are mostly young horses which were purchased in England and France as weanlings and, as a result, are not as heavily engaged in stakes as are those purchased here. English and French breeders do not name wholesale for our Futurities and Belmonts and Realizations. The horses which were shipped from Belmont Park late last fall are well advanced in training. They were hardened up during the winter months by plenty of outdoor work. The horses were given limbering up exercise on the main track at Belmont Park today in preparation for faster work from now on. Among the older horses in the Howe stable are Double Pay, Gay Night, Gold Brook, Gowan, Lord Quinton, Norse and Tetrarchal. Gold Brook is named for the Preajcness and Kentucky Derby. He will be started at Jamaica and if he trains well will be shipped to Pimlico to start in the Preakness Stakes. His showing in that race will govern the plans as to the Derby. Gold Brook filled out well during the winter and has a smooth way of going. He will be ridden this year by the veteran Johnny Mai-ben. The latter is at present at his home. Salt Lake City, and is due to report at the stable on April 15. Double Pay will be the main reliance of the stable for the "cup" races. He earned his right for a try at these prizes by his splendid showing last year. Continued on sixteenth page. McCREERY IN NEW YORK Continued from first page. Tetrarchal and Norse wintered well and are in good condition. The Sewickley Stable is made up mostly of jumpers. McCreery has several green jumpers in his charge, which were made during the winter. In this lot is War Flier, which was purchased from the Fair Stable last fall. War Flier is a son of Man o War True Flier. He is said to be a promising prospect over the jumps. McCreery is undecided as to whether he will start any of his jumpers at the United Hunts meeting. Humanist and Thorndale are also included in the division this year. The steeplechase jockeys with the stable are Fitzgerald and Burgess. They were attached to the stable last season. Trainer Pat Dwyer, of the W. J. Salmon stable, announced yesterday that he" would Ship the. division which will be raced at Havre de Grace to Maryland on Friday. The horses will be turned over to Jack Pryce to race. Dwyer will confine his attention to those remaining here, which will be raced at Jamaica. Pryce has four horses at Bowie and, with the seven to be shipped Friday, will bring his stable up to a well-balanced one. Those to be shipped are Black Diamond, Dr. Freeland, Snowflake, Swinfield and Perfect Play. Two two-year-old fillies will also be selected to go South. The two favored at present are Ladder and Light Step. Word was received at Belmont Park that A. j. Joyner. with the George D. Widener stable, would be a late arrival this spring. Joyner shipped from the farm to Havre de 1 Grace the latter part of this week.
