?v $ Percentage of Winning Favorites Canada for Twenty Years a Last year was the worst in twenty years for favorites in Canada. "Why?" is a question that must remain unanswered unless it be from the increase in competition and the greater scope of racing in the Dominion. Thirty-eight per cent winners among the favorites is the average figure for the score of years. Were it not for the high averages of 1010, 1911, 1912, 1910, 1914 and 1915, however, it would,have been much lower. Out of 2.05S-races decided in 1929, only 671 favorites were able to win, a percentage of i33 109 of them won at odds-on, 102 were defeated at odds-on, an average of about 50 per cent. A close study of the table seems to indicate that the outsiders have one chance in three to defeat the first and second choice in a race. That figure lias not been maintained in recent years, however, the number of outsiders winning showing a steady increase with a consequent drop in percentage for favorites.
