Favored by !summery weather and superb racing conditions, the 1930 season of racing in this state had its inauguration before a near capacity crowd at the historic track of the Kentucky lAssociation here tins afternoon. The large attendance, which closely approached a rec-ord, included almost full number from among the local enthusiasts, and Cincinnati, Louisville and other fairly adjacent points had no light representation in the throng. Patrons manifested keen interest in the fine sport which came out of an exceptionally attractive initial offering and there developed ,an outstanding surprise for them when Mon-itanaro, which races for Harry C. Hatch, of iToronto, raced away with honors in the Phoenix Hotel Purse, the feature. Racing Jthe one mile and seventy yards in the fast time of 1:43, Montanaro scored decisively over Mrs. Payne Whitneys Stars and Bars; ill. M. Eastmans alike Hall, George Collins Patricia Marian, and two others, which proved vastly overmatched. IX FIXE FETTLE. Trainer Lloyd Gentry brought the victor to his engagement in the finest of form and, carrying an impost of 122 pounds, won easily and by almost three lengths over Stars and Bars, which had a like final adTantage over Mike Hall, the rugged Hourless gelding, which was making his first start since his return from England six months ago. .Mike Hall was backed to the exclusion of his company and, while he appeared nicely placed by trainer Walter Taylor, in that he was required to concede no weight to the winner and to make comparatively small concessions to the others, he met one of the most decisive defeats of his career. . A number of Ashland, Kentucky and La-tonia Oaks candidates met in the Boonesboro Purse, the secondary feature and its running over the Futurity course resulted in a popular victory for the locally owned Manta. The daughter of Cudgel and Paloma was making her first start of the year and, racing in top form, carried the colors of Brownell Combs to the finish a length in the van of George Collins Justina. Supreme Sweet, Otto Tor-rells starter, and like Justina, thoroughly seasoned as a result of campaigning at the winter meetings, took down third place, while Supryse led the five others. Supreme Sweet was installed the favorite, but she never succeeded in getting to the winner and Justina caught her tiring as the race drew to a close and gamely outfinished her for second place. During the opening half mile Ellice raced with the winner in advance of the others, only to retire rapidly when the real racing began. COOTS FIRST AVIXXEH. Harry Hart saddled the initial winner of the meeting and season when George Collins Coots led home a small band of top grade platers suited by the Futurity course distance in the opening race. Harold Thomas brought the victor from behind in the stretch I I and he was up to win by a good half length over Hot Shot and Film, which finished a I j head apart. The latter pair were subjected to hard racing in showing the way for the I opening five-eighths and after Film had I headed him a short distance from the finish Hot Shot wore him down in the final strides, yet failed at withstanding the winners rush. Through the stretch Judge Murphy followed in near pursuit of the most successful trio and finished going gamely a length back of Film. There was an auspicious debut for Mrs. Payne Whitneys Greentree Stable colors, Which are destined for regular showing throughout the Kentucky and Illinois seasons, when Reverberate carried them to a decisive triumph over six other maiden two-year-old fillies in the half mile second race. Edward Haughton had the daughter of Thunderer and Flora McFlimsey in fine condition for her effort and, while she suffered some ill luck, was so much the best that she got away with honors by almost two lengths over Delma Dunn. Watch Girl followed two lengths back in earning third by a nose over Ournan. During the opening five-sixteenths jockey Dent Smith, astride the Winner, experienced difficulty obtaining a clear course for her, as Delma Dunn, after Continued on sixteenth page. When clear the winner, a pronounced favorite, quickly took command and raced on to win in hand. Bogan, the well fancied starter of Jack Howard, easily defeated Gold Ridge, Demon and nine others from among the cheaper grade platers in the third race, at one mile and a sixteenth. He led throughout under a nicely judged ride by Leslie Pichon, and had one and a half lengths to spare over the fast finishing Gold Ridge, which easily wore down Demon after entering the stretch. Aside from a brief trial of the Jarvis gate here two years ago, there was a departure from previous custom in the conduct of Todays racing, when the Waite starting gate was used for dispatching the fields for each of the seven races. The device accomplished satisfactory work and this despite a rather ragged start in the sixth race.
