NO OUTSTANDING GALLOPS Trainers of Derby Eligibles at Lexington Are Going Easily With Their Candidates LEXINGTON, Ky., April 21. Only slow works were attempted by Kentucky Derby candidates here this morning. Most of the "classic" eligibles under saddle were given long gallops, while a comparatively few indulged in short moves or "openers" for more ambitious works tomorrow. H. P. Headleys Ante Bellum and Dark Entry, which returned to competition last week, were sent an easy half mile each, the time being :49 in each instance. They were kept under strong restraint and there was no display of the high speed of their concluding days before donning colors. C. W. Riedingers Alvin Ranshaw breezed three-eighths in :36and, while F. F. Brants Eil-Weir went seven-eighths in 1 :30 and R. S. Clarks Hieover sped over over three furlongs in :35. He was under brisk pressure all during the final quarter. Racketeer went a like distance handily in :3G. C. W. Bidwills Tea Cracker was the lone candidate seen in a distance move, trainer Roy Slomer sending him a mile in 1:46, breezing. George Collins Justina and Thistle Ann, candidates for Wednesdays Ashland Oaks, figured in noteworthy trials when, working together, they negotiated a mile in 1 :42. They were extended to the fullest and ran the quarter in :23, half inile in :48: three-quarters in 1:14, and seven-eighths in 1:28. Dick OHara, which went a mile in 1:43 last Wednesday, traversed a like distance in 1 :43 well in hand. He was over the opening quarter in :24 and, after turning a half mile in :49, went on to the end of three-quarters in 1:16. Bert Williams, who is training the son of Light Brigade, has indicated that he is almost certain to carry Mr. Joyces colors in the Churchill Downs classic. Uncle Luther also worked once around the track in 1:46. He was in hand from start to finish and went the quarter in :24 ; half mile in :50, and three-quarters in 1:18.
