HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Happy Scot winner of the Pimlico Nur ¬ sery Stakes of the Maryland Jockey Club Friday is rapidly racing his way into true juvenile prominence Possessed of an elec ¬ trical burst of speed his victories have been scored with consummate ease and there is every reason to expect that he will carry along when he meets stiffer opposition than has been furnished in Maryland Happy Scot races for Samuel Ross his breeder and is a son of Scotch Broom and Felicitation a daughter of Delhi DelhiScotch Scotch Broom is a young sire of which little is known but he is a brother to Last Straw the filly hat raced brilliantly for G D Widencr He is just ten years old at this time and has had comparatively few breeding opportunities opportunitiesScotch Scotch Broom is a son of Ultimus and Broom Flower a daughter of Broomstick and Kildare by Darebin He was only started once as a twoyearold and did not graduate from the maiden class until the October meeting at Laurel the following year He was winner of one race as a fouryearold a six furlongs dash and then as a fiveyear old lie was raced by H G Bedwell and had a strenuous if not an altogether successful campaign campaignHappy Happy Scot is engaged in the Keene Memorial and the Juvenile Stakes at Belmont Park and in those runnings his quality should be thoroughly tested He has every reason to race fast with Ultimus for parent while Broom Flower bringing in the Broom ¬ stick and Ben Brush strain should make for an ability to carry that speed over the worth ¬ while in the stretch It is entirely possible that this colt will race his way into greater fama before the present racing year is much further advanced First of the important juvenile specials for the Belmont Park meeting is the Keene Me ¬ morial which is to be decided May 17 the day on which the famous old Kentucky Derby will be decided decidedThe The Keene Memorial closed with 238 nomi ¬ nations Should as many as ten go to the post for this four and a half furlongs race over the Widener course the prize will have a value of approximately 8500 giving it a monetary as well as a sporting importance It is safe to promise that more than ten will be under silks and almost every day there are shown eligibles that properly be ¬ long in such company companySome Some of the eligibles that have already shown a degree of quality in races are the Greentrce Stables Twenty Grand Gigantic Happy Scot Mad Career Harum Scarum Equipoise Robins Egg and Eddie Baker as well as several others Twenty Grand proved himself in his one race Gigantic is a son of Trojan and Prodigious which races foi his breeder Joseph E Davis Happy Scol is a son of Scotch Broom and Felicitation that races for Samuel Ross of Washington and his performances have been sensational Mad Career races for Walter J Salmon and is a half brother of that sterling old campaigner Display being a son of Mad Hatter and Cicuta He has proven himsell under silks Equipoise is one of the II P Whitney nominess and he has had a degre of education in Maryland Harum Scarum is from the Wheatley Stable and a Mad Hatter filly of undoubted quality Unfortu ¬ nately Mrs M P Allens unbeaten Vandei Pool is not an eligible and in fact he does not enjoy any stake engagement for Hit Belmont Park meeting As the date for this running draws near other of the eligibles will be uncovered and thus there seems to be good reason to expect that the juveniles ol 1930 will measure up a remarkably good lot One has only to read through the list ol wonderful horses bred trained or sold by the late John E Madden to have some apprecia ¬ tion of the wonderful accomplishments ol that remarkable man in a long life of en ¬ deavor devoted to the American thorough ¬ bred bredHere Here is a partial list of that marvellous roll of honor Hamburg The Finn Sir Martin Kilmarnock Salvidere Irish Lad Blue Girl Adam Bede Novelty King James Plaudit Gunfire Heno Beldame Meelick Yankee Joe Madden Fayette Sir Barton Paul Jones Zev Old Rosebud Flying Ebony and Star Lore LoreThese These are only some of the many given to racing by John E Madden and it is easily understood how this remarkable man kept his name at the top of the list of breeders year after year So thorough was his breed ¬ ing method and his knowledge of blood lines that the progeny of Hamburg Place will con ¬ tinue to carry on and be a tremendous in ¬ fluence on bloodstock Even should Christopher J Fitzgerald fail to induce British sportsmen to send over suitable candidates for the proposed Inter ¬ national race of the Arlington Park Jockey Club the coming of Lord Derby to this coun ¬ try is an event of great importance in bringing two great racing countries closer together togetherThe The interest that the Earl of Derby has shown in coming here to study our breeding and racing tells of the English interest in our sport There is no more successful breeder and sportsman in the turf world and no bigger figure in the sport Elaborate plans have been made for the entertainment of the distinguished visitor who is the guest of Joseph E Widener and the truly big thing is that it is purely a sporting visit and for the purpose of becoming better acquainted with our breeding and racing
