Years LOUISVILLE Ky May G Derby horse moved hither and yon before inspecting eyes at Churchill Downs today No few hopefuls for the coveted fixture coming up for its fiftysixth running at the mentioned course on Saturday May 17 were under saddle for brisk conditioners while others reached the scene of the most important engagement of their careers from Lexington Track and stable attaches busied themselves preparing quarters for still others among the years outstanding threeyearolds coming from eastern points pointsOn On the fast track and at an early hour High Foot the much fancied and stoutly backed candidate of the Valley Lake Stable of Messrs Nash and Partridge in preparation for his first race since the Fair Grounds meeting breezed threequarters in 114 and eased up a mile in 144 The son o Prince Pal and Belle Fair never acted bet ¬ ter and the easy move in company with Buddy Basil last years Latonia Derby win ¬ ner was the last of consequence before he dons colors to race six and onehalf furlongs with Derby company here Saturday the opening day of the nineteenday meeting meetingWith With Carl Meyer his regular and Derby rider in the saddle High Foot went the quarter in 24 half mile in 49 and five eighths in 101 Despite strong restraint of his rider High Foot pulled away from Buddy Basil and it was with no little difficulty that Meyer slowed him down to the desired degree while galloping out the additional quarter quarterIn In a statement this morning J B Par ¬ tridge who directs the colts training ex ¬ pressed complete satisfaction with the man ¬ ner in which his star charge is approaching the Derby DerbySome Some may say that he is not as good as when he ran those two sensational races at the Fair Grounds but I know differently and am well pleased with was mildly indulged during the closing stages but is not much of a worker and came out of the drill little distressed Letellier sent him into his trial at the eighth post and after run ¬ ning to the threequarers ground he was joined by All Upset and an eighth later My Hobby swung in with the two three yearolds All Upset was timed in 116 for threequarters and My Hobby in 1 05 for fiveeighths Both All Upset and My Hobby breezed throughout their trials trialsFractionals Fractionals of time for Playtimes long run were 25 50 116 and 143 143Less Less prominent eligibles went through regu ¬ lar training paces and as the racing strip sizzled with activity Edward F Prichards Tannery one of the reigning stalwarts in the Wests strong battery of Derby hopefuls arrived from Lexington where he accounted for his only two starts the last a smashing triumph over E R Bradleys Breezing Thru and Buckeye Poet PoetTannery Tannery in charge of his regular groom made the eightymile trip by car and arrived at Churchill Downs shortly before 9 a m He was unaccompanied and shipped better than at any previous time A Baker trainer of the Prichard representative and the big stable of R S Clark shipped his other horses by express and it was several hours later before they filed in at the local track Only a short distance from where Tannery found his quarters track attaches were pre ¬ paring a number of stalls for the division of William Woodwards Belair Stud that will include the crack Gallant Fox equal choice with High Foot for Derby honors In the charge of James Fitzsimmons Gallant Fox and his companions are expected to reach here early next week They will be quartered in the stable of Johnson N Camden CamdenIn In the Audley Farm barn trainer Kay Spence of the western division of the pre ¬ tentious stable maintained by B B Jones set aside stalls for Woodcraft which with Gallant Knight will carry the Audley silks in the fiftysixth Derby Woodcraft a son of Ormondale and Wood Violet which yes ¬ terday defeated Crack Brigade Michigan Boy Colossal and Desert Light in the one mile and seventy yards Worthington Purse at Pimlico will leave that track shortly after filling his engagements in the Preak ness Stakes Friday He will be accompanied West by Lillabelle the stables Kentucky Oaks candidate and possibly one or two oth ¬ ers in S M Hendersons charge chargeG G W Foreman advised that he expected to leave Pimlico without further delay with Ned O the Campfire gelding which showed a return to top form when he finished sec ¬ ond to Phillip in the threequarters Ren nert Handicap at that Maryland course yes ¬ terday and others in his stable C Quat tlebaum is coming west to ride Ned O in the Derby DerbyPresent Present indications according to Churchill Downs officials are that a greater number of Derby horses will leave Maryland after participating in the Preakness Stakes for the local classic than ever before AH of the more successful ones in the Prenkness are expected to reach the Downs by Monday or Tuesday at the latest
