1920 DERBY WINNER DEAD Physical Infirmities Necessitate NecessitateDestruction Destruction of Paul Jones Cost 1000 as Yearling RICHMOND Va May C Two Kentucky Derby winners Meridan and Paul Jones found homes in Virginia at the Inglecrest Stud of Dr John Paul Jones near Charlolles ville Paul Jones was destroyed recently due to physical infirmities hut Meridan lives and at 22 the brown stallion is virile His activities at stud are more widely recog ¬ nized since he made a worthwhile contribu ¬ tion to 1929 racing in Glen Wild Maryland bred winner of the North Shore and Riggs Memorial Handicaps These victories added more than 30000 to the bank account of Dr J Fred Adams Glen Wilds breeder and owner and insurance accruing from the chestnut colts death doubled the amount named namedPaul Paul Jones was bred by John E Madden at Hamburg Place where Thomas F Ryan had sent his English stallion Sea King for a stud season in 191G and the brown colt whose dam was May Florence by Hamburg came in 1917 Unsexed and sent to the races as a twoyearold the son of Sea King did not figure among the best of the juveniles hence was dropped into selling and claiming races by his owner the Baltimore sports ¬ man Ral Parr ParrKnocked Knocked down to William Garths bid of 1000 at the Saratoga yearling sales and later saddled by Garth Paul Jones won more than G000 as a juvenile He was not highly regarded early in his threeyear old form but was started in the Kentucky Derby with the hopes of the Garth confed ¬ eracy centered in Blazes a stablemate Blazes failed and Paul Jones won with Upset second and On Watch still the best son of the brilliant Colin third thirdAn An even more meritorious performance however credited to the son of Sea King was his triumph in the Suburban Handicap when Boniface and W S Kilmers valiant Exter ¬ minator fell before his prowess prowessPaul Paul Jones ended his days as a qualified hunter in Virginia where ridden to hounds by Dr and Mrs Jones in chasing the fox over Albemarles vineclad hills the old gelding could run far and fast On the turf he earned more than G4000 and proved a profitable investment on his original cost of 1000
