POPLAR CREEK BEST Patapsco Steeplechase Results in Usual Stirring Contest Hunts Club Set Swells Attendance Attendanceat at Pimlico Blind Lane LaneScores Scores in Third BALTIMORE Md May 6 The running of the Patapsco Steeplechase at Pimlico this afternoon brought out the full quota of the hunts club set who helped to swell the attendance to one of the largest crowds of the meeting The former runnings of the Patapsco Steeplechase have always furnished stirring contests and todays race was no exception to the rule The finish was a driving one in which the Eastland Farm Stables Popular Creek won by a length and a half followed by Mrs R V McKims Hoecake which beat Rigan McKinneys Gold ¬ en Gorse by a neck for second place Jo ¬ seph E Wideners Mirage was fourth fourthThe The conditions of the race called for two miles in which the horses were asked to negotiate thirteen jumps In the early stages Huon Joy and Eon set the pace Taking the fourth jump they were a neck apart At the seventh jump Brown Stout went down and Rollicking Princess and Eon fell over her Huon Joy then took a lead of a couple of lengths over Stoney Lonesome which had moved up fast At the twelfth jump Stoney Lonesome took command and was leading Popular Creek by a length and a half At the next obstacle Huon Joy fell and Stoney Lonesome which was still in front made a bad landing went to her knees and all but fell Worrell snatched her up and in some manner the mare scrambled to her feet The mishap put her out of the running and Popular Creek then came on to win in a driving finish Fortunately the riders of the horses that fell escaped with minor bruises and scratches Brown Stout however came out of the race lame lameONE ONE FOU MAX IIIKSCII IIIKSCIIMax Max Hirsch after several unsuccessful at ¬ tempts finally sent a winner to the post when he saddled the Goodstone Stables Blind Lane in the third race Blind Lane a daughter of Blind Play showed fine speed and when it came to the running simply ran away from her opponents Beginning from the inside Pete Walls sent her into a long lead in the first furlong and mak ¬ ing the turn for home she was five lengths in front of Jolly King In the final fur ¬ long Blind Lane had all back of her sound ¬ ly beaten and at the finish she still had a lead of four lengths over Jolly King which in turn beat Meek by three lengths for second place placeThe The Foxcatcher Farms sent a pair of Wilderness colts to the post in Purple Sage and Barrenhill Both were first time start ¬ ers and attracted much attention in the paddock parade They raced greenly and were evidently out for educational purposes In the early spring at Havre de Grace the twoyearolds in the Foxcatcher Farms stable were highly thought of Several had shown brilliant trials but all were taken down with bucked shins just before that meeting opened and were let up on The outfit is going from here to Belmont Park and it would not be surprising to find that some of the youngsters developed into good racers AVALOX IX FRONT FRONTNine Nine started in the first race a four and a half furlongs contest for twoyearolds All Hail went to the post favorite When the start came Reglna H was first to show and before they had gone an eighth Glidelia was on almost even terms with her Passing the half mile post Bejshak sent Avalon up with a rush to join the leaders Taking the lead on the far turn Avalon remained in front thereafter At the eighth post he 1 stalled off a determined challenge from All Hail The pair was under punishment and at the end Avalon beat All Hail by a length When put to a drive Glidelia tired and was beaten by five lengths for second place placeSergeant Sergeant Swenke finally won a purse when his colors were seen in front for the first time in Maryland this spring Friejof Nan sen carrying them to victory in the fourth race Ridden by E Ambrose and setting the pace Friedjof Nansen went to the front in the run to the first turn and was never headed In the early stages opposition was furnished by Deronda and when the latter tired Fair Albert moved up and the Bed well racer got almost on even terms with the leader and at this stage it appeared as though he might win Ambrose who usually has a bit up his sleeve for a final effort called on Friedjof Nansen and en ¬ tering the stretch the latter drew away again and was half a length in front at the furlong post A stirring finish between this pair then ensued Friedjof Nansen was hanging on with determination and Fair Albert was unable to gain an inch They raced in this order to the finish and as they passed the judges the leader still had an advantage of half a length Alabama Bound finished third beaten by two lengths and a half for second place placeGeorge George Palmer leaves for Berwyn Pa where he will do the starting at the meeting of the Radner Hunts He will also start at the twoday meeting given by the Rose Tree Hunts The manager of the S W Labrot stud re ¬ ports that the mare Stickpin was destroyed Stickpin developed a malignant growth on one of her eyes which affected her whole system
