JOCK FAILS AT DOWNS Tantivy and Fiddler Finish Before E B McLean Star Veteran One of Strongest Favor ¬ ites of Louisville Meeting Sis Agnes Suprises LOUISVILLE Ky May 27 Jock Edward B McLeans great old campaigner furnished one of the outstanding upsets of the meeting when after being installed one of the strong ¬ est favorites of the current Kentucky season ne was beaten decisively in the Saddlery Association Purse a race over six and one half furlongs at Churchill Downs this after ¬ noon The once great son of Colin although appearing to be well placed encountered in Harry Payne Whitneys Tantivy and Fiddler the starter of Gallaher Combs a pair too speedy for him and raced home a distant third thirdAlthough Although when at the peak of his brilliant career the McLean racer might easily have made good for the big following he attracted today There was some excuse for him as Tantivy the victor raced the distance in 117 within onefifth of a second of the track record and it was Fiddlers fast early pace which Jock forced that contributed to the fast race raceWhile While forcing the early pace and in front for the entire distance E Ambrose raced the favorite unnecessarily wide and failed to bid seriously when the real racing began In the stretch Tantivy which began slowly found room on the inside and finishing with a great rush got up for the lead in time to pull away and score by a length as Fiddler had twice as much of a final margin over Jock JockRUSSELL RUSSELL I3T LIMELIGHT LIMELIGHTKenneth Kenneth Russell had the mount on the win ¬ ner his third of the afternoon which found the Whitney rider displaying his greatest skill It was a great day for the sport and another good sized crowd attended attendedProse Prose and Poetry also sired by Omar Khayyam scored his second victory in as many starts this year when he ran one mile in the Lexington Purse the secondary fea ¬ ture in 137 to win easily with Portman ¬ teau second and Ladrone third Prose and Poetry won by two lengths while Portman ¬ teau finished some six lengths in front o Ladrone LadroneRussell Russell sent the winner into the lead with a rush approaching the stretch and gaining command took him under restraint Port ¬ manteau which held the lead briefly found the winner too much but kept on gamely and his showing shattered a feeling that his previous winning effort was of the fluke variety varietyNurcola Nurcola among the eight starters here and under colors for the first time in more than two years broke down badly shortly after leading out of the chute and C Turk his rider showed fine skill in saving him from a fall fallFIRST FIRST VICTORY OF YEAR YEARThomas Thomas Sanford saddled a winner for J Graham Browns Hotel Stable when Sis Ag ¬ nes came through with her first triumph of the year to account for the threequarters race which opened the program Six other threeyearold fillies started with Lady Fin ¬ gers racing to second place a length back and a nose in front of Fair Rosalind When called upon in the stretch the neglected win ¬ ner readily wore down Fair Rosalind and Lady Fingers and maintaining fine speed to the eijd drew away fast in the final stages Apprentice Ellsworth had the mount on the winner winnerNormahal Normahal a daughter of Omar Khayyam and Atela ridden by Kenneth Russell raced home an easy winner over ten other maiden juveniles of her sex in the fiveeighths sec ¬ ond race Gradiset which ruined an excel ¬ lent chance for victory when she bore out on the stretch turn followed three lengths back and third went to In Between coupled with Baggage Maid MaidRussell Russell had the winner in the fore flight from the start and while favored through the erratic performance of Gradiset she easily overhauled the early leader and In Between and was going away fast in the final seventy yards Gradiset outstayed In Between by almost two lengths and the latter had but a head over Spring Cleaning at the end Spring Cleaning and Tavy the Greentree Stable en ¬ try came in for most support and while they suffered on the stretch turn when Gradiset forced them and others to the center of the track the more successful ones overcame the interference interferenceOld Old Gaily completed a double for J Gra ¬ ham Browns Brown Hotel Stable trainer Sanford and apprentice W Ellsworth when he drove home a neck in front of Bob Kcrnan in the third race for which Duelist was the favorite The latter after showing the way to the final quarter tired fast and failed to share in the money second going to Bob Kernan while Myth was third
