THORNCLIFFE PARK OPENS Leaside Purse Eesults in Thrilling Inaugural Attraction Hello of Gorans Takes treasure of Gerard GerardIn In Final Drive Large Crowd Crowdin in Attendance TORONTO Ont May 27 The meeting of the Tliorncliffe Racing and Breeders Asso ¬ ciation began auspiciously this afternoon An immense crowd turned out and good sport was provided The program was made up of a series of seven races and the Leaside Purse was offered as the main attraction This race which was run as the fourth brought a field of the best horses on the grounds to the post It furnished a stirring contest in which J J Farrells Belle of Govens came from behind in the stretch to get up in the last fifty yards to beat the Palmwood Sta ¬ bles Gerard by a half length W L Brodies Wellet was third thirdNine Nine started in the Leaside Purse and it was one of the most interesting races of the afternoon Several of the starters had strong support and at post time J F Byers Panuco was favorite favoriteWhen When the start came Wellet which was a bit fractious at the barrier was as good as left Gerard was away in front and Mc Ginnis made the most of his advantage Going into the back stretch he led French Lass by half a length and at the half mile post increased his advantage to a length and a half Talky was still second and French Lass was third Martis was fourth unable to improve his position and Belle of Govans was sixth Making the turn for home the field bunched up Belle of Govans was re ¬ sponding gamely to Passeros urging and straightened out for the final drive was in second place and gaining on the leader In the final furlong Belle of Govans caught and passed Gerard and as they passed the judges stand she was going away Wellet which closed an immense gap was gaining rapidly at the end In the last sixteenth he was forced to bump his way through Maiben and Kurtsinger eased their mounts up and at the end Martis was last and Panuco sixth sixthWalter Walter J Salmons Snow White a pro ¬ nounced favorite in the wagering justified the faith placed in her when she got up in the last few yards to win a verdict of a half length over Trice which set a fast pace and caused the supporters of Snow White no end of worry At Random closed some ground in the stretch to take third place by three lengths from Justiciary Trice and Justi ¬ ciary went out to set the early pace running heads apart with Snow White in fourth posi ¬ tion On the bend Snow White moved up and disposed of Justiciary but Trice was un ¬ willing to surrender and fought it out at every stride down through the straightaway A few yards out from the finish the Salmon colorbearer took command but Trice hung on in most determined fashion and forced the winner to give her best to get the major award At Random broke very slowly but closed with a rush Noel eased up Elcidio ElcidioThe The third race under allowance conditions attracted nine starters and Sonnelli from the Sewickley Stable and trained by Tom Mc Creery won by a length and a half from Table Talk Five lengths in the wake of Table Talk came Lamp Black to save third place by a neck from Every Time TimeJ J C Fletcher furnished the winner of the initial offering when Gimme Girl took the track shortly after the break and was never thereafter seriously threatened At the fin ¬ ish Gimme Girl was a handy winner over Hay Loft H Diemlers recent acquisition secured at the Seagram Stable sale at the Woodbine Third honors fell to Candy Man
