JTHEO ROCHESTER WINNER WINNERi i Defeats Germaine Chauvelot The Padre in Caseyville Purse Alex Woodliffo Scores in Fnlrmount TarkS TarkSPourtli Pourtli Leading Ethel Calliper and andAlma Alma Vita Favorites Beaten COLLINSVILLE 111 May 27 B L Rices threeyearold Theo Rochester de ¬ feated several older horses some good sprinters among them in the Caseyville Purse which featured todays program at Fairmount Park Germaine Chauvelot was second and The Padre third thirdMost Most of todays winners came from unex ¬ pected sources and those who played fa ¬ vorites fared badly Theo Rochester was one of the several outsiders that scored scoredViolin Violin a rank outsider in the betting was the winner of the opener which brought out eleven threeyearolds of the lower grade to race threequarters Morton raced to sec ¬ ond place with Itso third The veteran Clyde Ponce rode a brilliant race to get the winner in front and it marked the first victory for the Whitlow representative and her graduation from the maiden ranks It was quite pleasing to the few that backed her for the odds of 6338 for the usual 2 investment were the largest of the meeting Itso set the early pace but gave way to Morton after going a quarter and the latter looked all over a winner as they neared the finish But Violin which had been moving up gradually on the inside found racing room and under clever riding by Ponce wore down Morton to win going away Huesman and Surgeon were the fa ¬ vored ones in this with the former having the most admirers but neither figured seri ¬ ously in the running after going a half mile mileJ J L Wilson won his first race of the meeting when Panivana proved best of the threeyearolds that started in the second race George Van S was the one to be second with Plezall leading Curtain Call and nine others for third money Thistle Marty was the disappointment in this when he failed to race to expectations finishing seventh and at no time giving evidence of racing back to her recent good effort Ole Man Sunshine also came in for much support but failed to finish in the money moneyGeorge George Van S grouped with Tom Ormont and Stillwell as the field attracted much backing and it was up to George Van S to save second place for the players as Tom Ormont failed to race to his good morning trials while Stillwell raced far out of con ¬ tention for the entire distance distanceIt It was the first purse that Panivana had won in nearly a year and the second of his career and the capable ride of Tommy Root was the contributing factor in his triumph as that young man displayed clever horse ¬ manship to get the victor home in front by half a length lengthLauhala Lauhala showed much improvement under the riding of apprentice B Hanford and led home a band of juveniles in the third race Molly Hogan was the one to offer most con ¬ tention and took second place from Frankie Serembas Atlas which finished a head be ¬ fore Nervator NervatorStarter Starter Wingfield had no end of trouble with the field of which Shasta Lover Lau ¬ hala Gertrude Reade and Atlas contributed chiefly to the long delay at the barrier when they repeatedly broke through the barrier At one time Shasta Lover bolted to a near ¬ by field with an assistant starter holding on with all his strength strengthAlex Alex Woodliffe the aged son of Torch Bearer broke into the ranks of winners after several unsuccessful attempts and in doing so downed Ethel Galliger Alma Vita which finished second and third and five other platers that tried conclusions at one mile and seventy yards of the fourth race Among his victims was the much fancied Water Fowl from the stable of Ed McCuan and his downfall marked the defeat of four con ¬ secutive favorites favoritesBy By Product ranking threeyearold filly that participated in the recent Fairmount Derby has been withdrawn from the Ken ¬ tucky Oaks due to minor injuries received during the running of her last engagement It was fortunate that the filly was not more seriously injured as she suffered a wound near the hamstring
