BRILLIANT YOUNGSTER Equipoise Demonstrates Quality Qualityin in Valuable Juvenile Stakes Carries 125 Pounds and Runs Five Eighths Over Widener Course in 59 NEW YORK N Y May 27 Equipoise the son of Pennant and Swinging that races for Harry Payne Whitney gave real evi ¬ dence of high class when he won the Juvenile Stakes over the Widener course at Belmont Park today Racing into a wind that blew up the course and carrying top weight of 125 pounds he ran the five furlongs in 59 sec ¬ onds to add 15400 to his earnings Samuel Ross Happy Scot which made a reputation in Maryland raced to second place and Panasette also from the Whitney stable was an easy third thirdThe The weather was still unseasonably cold for the sport and a high wind blew over the course but the crowd was a big one and the sport of the first order orderTom Tom Healey had declared to win with Equi ¬ poise but Panasette played a part in the vic ¬ tory when she carried Happy Scot along at a fast pace from the rise of the barrier while Equipoise was well back of the pair of them until the final furlong was reached There Workman sent the son of Pennant along with a strong hand ride and running straight and true he answered the call to be first past the finish by a neck Happy Scot had outgamed Panasette to save second place by a half length and Gifford A Cochranes Helianthus was fourth a good six lengths back backLO LO G DELAY AT POST POSTThere There was a long delay at the post for which The Afghan was largely responsible and then when the barrier went up he was not ready and might as well have been left for all the chance he had The start was a ragged one and the three placed horses at the finish were all away in good position positionThe The Juvenile Stakes is one of the truly old American fixtures having had its first run ¬ ning in 1871 at Jerome Park It was then run at Morris Park and has been continued at Belmont Park since 1905 The rosters of winners contains the names of many famous horses but Equipoise showed a quality to entitle him to a place with the good ones onesIncidentally Incidentally when Workman brought Equi ¬ poise home the winner he completed a dou ¬ ble for he had previously scored a close victory with Goose Egg EggThere There was a good finish in the race for fillies and mares when Goose Egg from the Greentree Stable under a good ride by Sonny Workman just beat the Sagamore Stables The Spare with Black Mammy fin ¬ ishing third before Sweep Out and Shady Lady the only other starters startersFrom From a moving start The Spare was first to show the way and Gosoe Egg and Shady Lady went right along with her while Black Mammy beat Sweep Out away from the barrier But Sweep Out was not long last of the quintet She moved up Avith a rush until she was close after The Spare and Shady Lady though the Sagamore filly seemed to be racing under restraint Goose Egg was holding a forward position while T31ack Mammy as usual was outrun and last of the band but well within striking distance distanceBefore Before the stretch was reached Shady Lady was finding the pace a bit too fast and she showed signs of tiring while The Spare looked all over a winner but Workman had reserved Goose Egg for the stretch chal ¬ lenge and Black Mammy was going exceed ¬ ingly well Fator was forced to lose some ground on the stretch turn but Black Mammy was so close after the first two that she was extremely dangerous dangerousIn In the last eighth Bejshak realized his danger and sat down to ride The Spare out with vigor But Goose Egg was answering Workmans call with gameness and in the final strides she dropped her nose down in front Black Mammy in the meantime after finishing resolutely tired slightly in the final strides
