Surprises were the order of the day at Washington Park when the program was decided under the most disagreeable weather and track condi ¬ tions during the meeting Cold rainy weather kept the surprisingly large crowd for such an afternoon under shelter and as they witnessed the sport over a watersoaked track upsets came in rapid fashion with the running of the principal races Two contests of feature magnitude were offered in the Lincoln Highway Handicap one mile and Wacker Drive Purse over seveneighths The latter exclusively for threeyearolds attracted much interest because of the pres ¬ ence in the field of Tannery and Ned O po ¬ tential candidates for the impending renewal of the American Derby In Ellice the star filly in the stable of J N Camden Ned O and Tannery met a tartar and leading them throughout she won decisively as Ned O outstayed Tannery for second place placeStars Stars and Bars racing in his best form scored in the Lincoln Highway Handicap with the Warm Stables the afternoon afternoonAT AT HOME iy GOIXG GOIXGEllice Ellice under the guidance of Paul Neal showed her best form in the muddy footing and racing into a long lead held sway to the end For more than threequarters Tannery under brisk pressure kept in close pursuit of the winner but the more sluggish beginner Ned O worked his way up during the run through the stretch and wrested second place from the Pritchard colt when within a short distance of the finish Both Tannery and Ned O came through with game efforts and the ability of Ellice to outsprint them under prevailing conditions did not detract from their prestige in American Derby calculation Still the result occasioned genuine surprise as the crowd backed Tannery almost to the exclusion of the others and his undoing occasioned much disappointment The race marked his first start since the Kentucky Derby and the first for Ned O since the Fairmount Derby Ellices success was her fourth in her last five starts startsThe The victory of Stars and Bars in the Lincoln Highway Handicap was attained through a most impressive effort the four yearold son of Pennant racing from last in the field of six with a great rush in the stretch front the Warm Stable racer continued in resolute fashion but the fastfinishing vic ¬ tor overhauled him in the final stages stages3IY 3IY DAiNDY TIKES TIKESAfter After swerving out during the early
