Juvenile Feature to Schooner TRIUMPH FOR SINCLAIR Rancocas Colors in Front in Thomas Curran Memorial Norias Second and Foreign Ex ¬ change Third Leucite Disappoints HOMEWOOD 111 June 7 The second running of the Thomas Curran Memorial Stakes for twoyearold colts and geldings and the stake offering at Washington Park this afternoon resulted in a mild surprise when Schooner racing coupled with Charmer under the colors of the Rancocas Stable of Harry F Sinclair proved an easy winner Well suited by the exacting heavy going which prevailed the successful son of Bud Lerner and Pinta drew away in the closing stages to win by two and onehalf lengths from Norias from J P Headleys Paradise Stock Farm while Mrs T J Regans For ¬ eign Exchange took third a nose back Inches in the wake of Foreign Exchange which was coupled with G Watkins Insco and Harry Frank came Chief John with Jay Walker Dandy Dan Bill Morris Shining Insco Charmer and Harry Frank following in the order named namedJockey Jockey R Ayraud had the mount on the victor and it was a victory worth 7230 while 1000 went to second 500 to third and 250 to fourth fourthLARGE LARGE CROWD PRESENT PRESENTThere There was a large crowd for the afternoon and although the races were decided under the most trying track conditions of the meet ¬ ing in the point of close finishes and con ¬ tention they were on a par with the most interesting furnished thus far Damp chilly weather made heavy wraps comfortable and the large crowd under such unfavorable con ¬ ditions reflected the popularity of the sport in these parts partsSlow Slow to settle into his best stride but lucky to miss the crowding on the turn the winner on the extreme outside for almost the entire race began working his way up fast after entering the stretch Norias and Harry Frank figured in a spirited duel for the lead but the latter was destined to give way badly after reaching the stretch and while Nonas failed in his game endeavor to withstand the victor he held on resolutely to successfully repulse Foreign Exchange and Chief John for second place placeSlight Slight interference in the stretch injured the chances of Foreign Exchange after the latter had improved his position shortly after entering the long stretch Impeded by Norias he recovered quickly and fought it out im ¬ pressively in the final strides with scarcely sufficient room roomChief Chief John after racing into the stretch on the outside swerved to the extreme inner part of the course and with Norias and Foreign Exchange raced to the finish in close quarters quartersIXSCO IXSCO ELI3IIXATED ELI3IIXATEDInsco Insco the chief dependence of the Regan Watkins entry which commanded the post of favoritism was almost definitely eliminated when crowded back on the turn and failed to respond when clear in the stretch Harry Frank which also carried the Watkins colors gave way badly when the final drice came and was eased up after dropping far out of contention contentionA A slight bobble when W Lennie her rider applied the whip when within thirty yards of the finish probably cost Broomshot an outsider victory in the seveneighths race which opened the card While unsteadied Ruane carrying the colors of the Valley Lake Stable made up just enough ground to beat her out in the final stride and in a nose finish Shift which like the victor jegan slowly was up for third place slightly more than a length back and well in the van of Lieut Russell which tired badly after following closes to the leading Broomshot to the stretch The victor shattered a string of illluck having on five previous occasions finished second Continued on twentysecond page SCHOONER TAKES FEATURE Continued from first page Nisia J N Cnmdens homebred daughter of Light Brigade and Plausible long a good producing combination for the Kentucky owner was returned an easy winner over Hyman Portcodine and nine other juvenile maidens in the fiveeighths second rare rareUnder Under a good ride by ICeal and displaying good speed in the going the likely winner led from the approach of the turn anil drawing away after reaching the strctcli hold the more fancied Ilyman safe to win by one and a half lengths Portcodine after be ¬ ginning slowly gradually made up ground and reaching third place In the stretch finished gamely Seguro and Brown Hills generally looked upon as contenders were others to begin sluggishly and the running witnessed their presence far back for the en ¬ tire race although Seguro rushed into fourth place during the final stages stagesG G H Neals consistent winner Seths Ballot added another purse to his earnings when he easily accounted for the third race He was a pronounced favorite with the big crowd and his triumph was a popular one Theo Tied came from a good distance back to take second place with Miss Maryland third thirdA A factor from the start the winner went to the front with a rush after seveneighths and pulling away into a long lead won with something left David L and llelene M which headed the others in the early stages faltered when the real racing began and only a big saving of ground permitted llelene M to outstay Royal Charge for third place while David Li was last to finish
