MONTANARO IS FORTUNATE Has Clear Field in Royal York When Black Diamond Bolts Sir Harry Is Third In 2500 Feature Event Eventat at Long Branch Great Jtock Is IsWinner Winner Over Dolly Seth TORONTO Ont June 7 Montanaro splendid fiveyearold son of Ormont and Neddie for which his owner H C Hatch paid a large figure repaid part of his pur ¬ chase price when he won the Royal Park Hotel Handicap at Long Branch today This was the best offering of the Long Branch session The race was anything but a truly run race Montanaro s victory Avas made eas ¬ ier for him when the favorite Black Dia ¬ mond bolted to the outside fence rounding into the back stretch also ruining whatever chance Shorelint may have had by forcing Cannon to take up the Tliorncliffe Stables candidate when they collided collidedMontanaro Montanaro clear of this interference quickly opened up a good lead and Smith had merely to sit still for the remainder of the trip He was well in advance of the Seagram Stables Sir Harry which made his usual rush through the home stretch to snatch second place from Butter John in the last few strides Butter John raced in closest pursuit of the winner from the out ¬ set held on with rare courage but was un ¬ able to withstand the closing bid of Sir Harry Beau of the West stablemate of Sir Harry was fourth fourthIt It appeared for a time that Black Dia ¬ mond was going through the fence but Lit ¬ tle straightened him away after all possible chance of figuring seriously in the running had disappeared The race carried a value of 2500 2500Cool Cool unseasonable weather did not deter one of the largest Saturday throngs of the season The races were decided over a fast track trackBen Ben Walters saddled the first winner of the afternoon when he sent out the Elm Tree Stables Footmark At the end of the five furlongs the son of Master Charlie was a neck in advance of Vice which races for R E Perry H G Bedwells Mental the favorite was third Verlyn Smith had the mount on the winner and quickly sent him into command followed by Vice with Mental third Thcrejjvasrno change in the positions in the run through1 the stretch though Vice was gainingfslowly on the outside of Footmark as they came to the finish Mental was never able to offer a challenge to the first two though easily saving third from Lore Wan ¬ dering Jim a starter from the J W Bean barn was unruly at the barrier and was away so slorwly as to cut scant figure in the running runningA A 1500 claiming race was second on the card It resulted in a victory for C E Wiernkes Black Pride after a drive with Glee Club an outsider owned by F C Mitch ¬ ell while Willie Cannon piloted Cabellsdale into third place placeRidden Ridden by F Dainty Black Pride took the lead in the first quarter disposed of Dublin Show which attempted to race with her opened up a good lead before reaching the half mile post and rated along in front was doing her best to hold the fastfinishing Glee Club safe Seven open lengths back of the leading pair came Cabellsdale which had come from last place to be third
