NEW YORK, N. Y., June 8.— The best field of sprinters witnessed in action in the East this season will face the barrier in the annual renewal of the Speed Handicap, five and a half furlongs test, which will be de- cided over the Widener course at Belmont Park tomorrow afternoon. Fifteen have been named overnight for the race. Balko, which will sport the silks of Mrs. Charles Amorys Sagamore Stable, has been assigned top weight of 132 pounds, conced- plenty of weight to his opposition. This black flash will endeavor to repeat his vic- tory of last season, when he carried 118 pounds to victory. John J. Curtis recent purchase, Flying Heels, has been assigned 122 pounds. Other high weights are the three-year-old Insti- gator, with 114, Judge Schilling 117, Chest- nut Oak, stablemate of Instigator, 116 and Black Majesty 115. The fleet, but faint- hearted Commuter is the lightweight of the J field with 102 pounds. Since its inception in 1926, the Speed I Handicap numbers among its winners, in addition to Balko, George D. Wideners Galetian, the Kershaw Stables Happy Argo, William Zieglers Polydor and Chestnut Oaks, which accounted for the 1929 renewal.
