Y., June 12.— Mrs. John Hertz filly, Risque, was winner of the best offering at Belmont Park today when she scored in the Amazon Purse, a dash for three-year-old fillies, but it was a close finish. Steffen rode a confident race on the daughter of Stimulus in the stretch when Callahan staged a rush with Harlem, from the Brookhurst Farm Stable, and as a re-i suit Mrs. Hertz" filly was only winner by a neck. Ten lengths back of these Bobby Folsom was third with a big margin over Novena. There was little of interest in the racing of the day, but the weather was bright, and the track had dried out nicely, so that conditions were much more agreeable than at any other time during the week. In this filly race Risque was giving away lumps of weight to all the other starters, but Steffen at once sent her into command, and she showed the way at all stages. When he had the filly racing along in front Steffen took hold of her head, and it was only when Harlem made her unexpected rush that he was forced to go to the whip to save the day. Helen Green was the one to go along in second place almost to the stretch turn while Harlem was racing third with Bobby Folsom and Novena following as named. Then as Helen Green tired Harlem moved into second place to come on and stage the exciting finish to a race that seemed before the running to be a formality for Risque, C A. Grands Morush, a daughter of Mor-e vich and Cushion, added another score for both jockey Catrone and trainer Clarence Continued on twenty-second page. 1 » - f l" - , T. I r r J !" in n r ? Buxton when she was winner of the opening dash, at five furlongs, for plater juveniles. These Morvich children know how to leave the post running, and Morush proved herself a real Morvich when she dashed to the front at the start to never be headed. At the end Catrone was shaking his whip at her to keep her at the task, and she was winner by a length over the Rancocas Sta- bles Contribute, which beat the Pasadena Stables Frances D. by three lengths for sec-. ond place. Joseph E. Langs Honey Grove proved easily best of the cheap ones brought to- gether in the second race, at one mile. Rated behind the pace by Kurtsinger to the stretch, he came through readily when called on to win by three lengths. Robert A. Fairbairns The Whip saved second place in the closing strides from F. Ambrose Callahans Gunther, 1 and Fly Guy, after going with all the pace, v»as a close fourth. There was a disqualification, and a de-j1 served one, in the one mile race, for platers, : which was run as the third race. This saw Al Jolsons Skyway set back for a stretch foul, and it moved Westko, from the Kil-j rane Stable, into first place, with T. M. Cassidys Bubsy C, second. Then there had to be a second disqualification for Carnival, - which finished fourth, had to be set back for he was sent to the post by H. Jacobs, who also saddled Skyway. Thus it was that the fifth horse at the finish, Dark Abbot, was moved into third place. Skyway was the one to set the pace, while Westko, after racing his way through on the I inside to the stretch, moved out to come outside Skyway. As he made his move, R. Fisher, who rode Skyway, came out, it seemed, deliberately, and carried the Kil-rane gelding almost to the outside rail. This ! seemed to be the only reason Westko was beaten by a neck instead of being first past the finish. Bubsy C. had saved ground in the stretch, : but he was four lengths back of the first two when he finished third. Malley promptly lodged his claim of foul, and after a ; short deliberation, there came the double disqualification. The fifth was a five furlong dash for the i juveniles through the Widener course and it brought about a double for Clarence Bux- ton and Catrone when J. H. Louchheims Economic was the winner. Red Sky, from | the Audley Farm Stable, raced to second 1 place and C. V. Whitneys Blond Knight just beat Hugh McCallan Jr. and The Crane for third. Economic had speed enough to force the pace throughout and Red Sky was better than the others, but no match for the winner ; and he was quitting at the end. Economic was winner by five lengths in the fast time of :58% and Red Sky had beaten the others by two lengths. There came a close fit in the mile for the I sixth when Captain P. M. Walkers Dunstan, starting for the first time since early May, i was up to win over Mrs. John Hertz His Last, with J. H. Louchheims Rodrack sav- ing third, » .
