SMALL BUT SELECT FIELD Only Five Carded to Start Today in Francis S. Peabody Memorial at Washington Park. HOMEWOOD, 111., June 26.— Although but five horses accepted weights for the third renewal of the Francis S. Peabody Memorial Handicap, which will be the closing days feature at Washington Park, the cream of the old handicap division now in condition to race will go postward, and an interesting struggle is assured. Paul Bunyan, winner of the race last year, will again try for the prize, as will Ironsides, last seasons runner-up, while the others are Gallant Knight, Mike Hall and Satin Spar. Until a few days ago it was thought that at least a dozen would contest, but injuries and lack of proper training have eliminated several of the main contenders. Sun Beau and Tannery have been shipped to Arlington Park, where both may try for the Arlington Inaugural Handicap, while Pigeon Hole has been thrown out of training for the season and Lady Broadcast will be given a rest. Pigeon Hole had the misfortune to bow a tendon in his last race, and trainer Taylor has ordered the star handicap horse sent to the Hal Price Headley farm near Continued on twenty-second page. SMALL BUT SELECT FIELD Continued from first page. Lexington, Ky., to be turned out. Lady Broadcast will be given a much needed rest after a strenuous campaign. Gallant Knight is favored to win tomorrows rich race, which carries with it a value of 0,000 added, but Mike Hall is considered formidable in many quarters, and Satin Spar, always dangerous, is not to be overlooked. The skies were cloudy today, and in the event of rain Paul Bun-yan, last years winner, would be conceded an excellent chance. As for Ironsides, he has displayed poor form this season, but may find himself, as he did last year, when he forced Paul Bunyan to do his utmost to win. Gallant Knight had his final prep for the race this morning when, with Carl Meyer on his back, he went six furlongs in 1:16 hard held. He appeared in excellent condition, and should have no excuse. Paul Bunyan was the only other candidate to work. He took a light breeze, going a half mile in :51. Jockeys have been announced for the quintet of starters, and C. Meyer will be on Gallant Knight, L. McDermott on Mike Hall, J. Gianelloni on Paul Bunyan, Willie Moran on Ironsides and jockey Bobby Jones, one of the leading riders at the meeting, on Satin Spar. Ironsides is rated as the extreme outsider, and there is a possibility that he may not start. The Washington Park management expects to entertain an exceptionally large crowd on the closing day of the 1931 meeting, and should the weather be clear it is probable that their expectations will be realized. The skies were cloudy today, however, and there appeared to be a possibility that rain would put a damper on the proceedings. The Francis S. Peabody Memorial Handicap had its first running in 1929, when Mon-tanaro, the winner, made a track record of 2:04y5 for the mile and a quarter distance, which still stands. Montanaro carried 98 pounds in his winning performance, while Paul Bunyan packed 115 to run it in two-fifths of a second slower last year. It is freely predicted that with a fast track a new mark will be established. The following are the five named to start: PP. Horse. Wt. Jockey. 1— Mike Hall 118 L. McDermott 2— Ironsides 104 W. Moran 3— Paul Bunyan 115 J. Gianelloni 4 — Gallant Knight 123 C. Meyer 5— Satin Spar T07 R. Jones • *
