WORKMANS RIDE WINS * Whitney Jockey Outrides Mack Garner in Aqueduct Feature. « Sun Mission Triumphs by Inches Over Curate in California Handicap — High Devine Repeats. i NEW YORK, N. Y., June 26.— Sun Mission, the consistent son of Sun Briar, which races for Dr. Irving Jacobs, was winner of the best offering at Aqueduct today when he scored in the California Handicap, an overnight event on a card that contained no special feature. It was the most thrilling finish of the day when Sun Mission just nosed out Joseph E. Wideners Curate, largely because Workman outrode Mack Garner, who had the mount on the Widener horse. Two lengths back of these, Flaming, the Bel-air Stud starter, beat Joseph E. Davis Gigantic by a narrow margin for third, and it was only being blocked in the stretch that prevented Gigantic from sharing in the purse. Weather and track conditions were ideal for the sport, though there was a wind blowing up the stretch that mitigated against fast time in the races. A good sized crowd enjoyed the sport. The start was a good one in the California Handicap, and Bobashela and Curate set a fast pace to show the way, while Gigantic almost at once dropped far out of the running. Condescend was chasing closely after the leaders, with Sun Mission in fourth place and showing the way to Flaming. BOBASHELA SETS PACE. Bobashela hung on to the lead with Curate to the head of the stretch where he was through, and as he began to drop back . Sun Mission moved up slightly. Gigantic, at that stage of the running was eight or ten lengths back and so far out of the running that he was forgotten. Garner had saved ground with Curate, and as Bobashela dropped back he looked a sure winner. Workman called on Sun Mission, and the old fellow began to gain and rushed up on Curate. Garner went to the whip, but in doing co he dropped his mounts head, and with ."! ~mte -".hipping ?nd hand riding he continued to the end where Workman, in a pov/ei.al linish, got Sun Missions nose in front. In the meantime Gigantic had begun to move up, and he was right at the heels of the others in the stretch, where Renick, unable to come through on the inside, pulled out, and as he changed the route of the colt he was unable to keep him from bearing out farther. He was going better than those in front of him, but Renick was of no help, and Flaming, by saving ground, beat him a head for third, though both of them were two lengths back of Curate. Bobashela, after his exhibition of early speed which contributed to the defeat of the Widener horse, quit and finished last. LINE OF FIRE SCORES. Ral Parrs Line of Fire, under a hustling ride by Robertson, was winner of the opening race. He won by a comfortable margin from the Audley Farm Stables Rocktor and Mrs. N. L. Byers Outguess saved third from H. W. Maxwells General Moon. From a good start Robertson had Line of Fire away fast from his inside position and, saving ground all the way, he never left the result in doubt, winning by three lengths. Rocktor and Outguess fought it out for second place, with the Audley gelding earning the award by a scant half length and General Moon beat the others. There was a good finish in the second, for three-year-olds, when Follow On, from the Sagamore Stable, outgamed Arab, the Ran-cocas Stable starter, to win a close decision. Third fell to the Audley Farm Stables Rocky News when he beat Fervor for that part of the purse. From a good start Follow On and Arab quickly drew away from the others and it developed into a match between the pair before the stretch was reached. They were a couple of lengths to thfe good and Follow On was just leading Arab by a length. In the run through the stretch they bumped repeatedly, but the fault seemed to be mutual and at the end Follow On was still a head to the good. Rocky News and Fervor followed the first two home and they had been racing third and fourth practically all the way. Rocky News proved the better in the final stages and he took third by a length from Sandy McNaughtons recent purchase. The others had cut scant figures in the race and By-Pass II., the C. T. Grayson starter, was so badly lamed in the running that he was pulled up far back of the others. Cuchulain carried the silks of the Tedlu Stable to an easy victory in the Ladkin Claiming Handicap, which was the third offering. Ferrera, from the Belair Stud Stable, raced to second place, just beating Mrs. Olive Curtis Garlic by inches for that part of the prize and Little Nap raced fourth. Pascuma sent Ferrera away fast and he made prodigal use of the son of Chatterton and contributed to his defeat. He was five or six lengths before the others in the early stages and Cuchulain was running second, with Kensington showing the way to Little Nap and Garlic. Dunlins Son had left the stalls slowly, but he had no speed when in full stride and never reached a contending position. The sprinting tactics carried Ferrera into the stretch with a clear lead, but before the final furlong post was reached he had begun to tire and Cuchulain ran past him easily, to come home the winner by three lengths. Garlic, after a slow beginning, was also rapidly wearing down Ferrera, but the colt lasted to save second place by a nose. Little Nap was also gaining resolutely when too late and he was just another half length back. Jockey Lambert received the congratulations of his fellow riders. He became the father of a baby girl yesterday. Jockey Studley was suspended for five days by the stewards.
