FIELD FOR JEFFERSON DERBY Lucky Tom, Camp Douglas and Springsteel Stand Out. Robinson Star Asked -to Concede Ten Pounds to Coughlin Colt and Four to Springsteel. NEW ORLEANS, La., Jan. 20. Several candidates for the Jefferson Derby, ,000 added, loom up as strong contenders for J. J. Robinsons Lucky Tom, and the race, over one mile, Saturday at Jefferson Park is a subject for much conjecture. The principal colt which handicappers agree should prove a menace for the Robinson colorbearer is J. J. Coughlins Camp Douglas, which did not start in the Derby Trial Purse Tuesday. In the weights which will be carried by the starters Saturday Camp Douglas will carry 110 pounds, while Lucky Tom is assigned 120 pounds. This is eight pounds more than Lucky Tom carried in the Derby Trial, which he won from Springsteel, Colonial Belle and Sandwrack others given a chance in the Saturday feature. Springsteel will carry 116 pounds and Sandwrack will get in at 110 pounds. Camp Douglas was scratched from the Trial Tuesday, his trainer preferring to work him over the Fair Grounds track and wait until Saturday for the meeting with Lucky Tom. He is said to favor a soft track and in the event of rain before Saturday figures to have a big chance. Sandwrack was hopelessly knocked out of the race by Lucky Tom Tuesday when he was interfered with as the barreir went up, yet made up much ground and finished a close fourth. S. W. Labrots Springsteel finished a good second to Lucky Tom Tuesday and, with the difference in weights Saturday, should be formidable. Bertjohn, E. R. Bradleys starter, started only once and finished third to Camp Douglas and Flying Don. Two other starters yet to be heard from are the Three Ds high priced Texas Knight and Sir Melton. One or both may start Saturday, according to John Schorr, trainer for the Three Ds Stable. A. Pelleteri, local owner, is placing his hopes on Colonial Belle, which showed an excellent effort in the Trial and will have a weight advantage in the Derby. The starting fee for the stake is 00 and it is believed that the following will start: Lucky Tom, Camp Douglas, Springsteel, Sandwrack, Colonial Belle, Crystal Prince, Bertjohn, Texas Knight, Thundertone, Ever-gold, Simple Singer, Louis Merryman and probably Prince Farthing.
