The winter champion of the three-year-olds will be awarded the laurels when eight of the best of the division now in training go to the post in the fifth renewal of the 0,000 Florida Derby, at Hialeah Park, the closing feature of the Miami Jockey Club meeting. This octet includes the most successful of the Derby-age division which have raced through the winter campaign in New Orleans and Florida and is undoubtedly the best field that has ever been named for Floridas major stake race. J. J. Robinsons Lucky Tom and Renaissance, invaders from New Orleans, will likely be installed favorites. They are superb mudlarks and the track will likely be slow for the running of the race. It is very heavy today, but under the hot tropical sun it should dry out steadily. Lucky Tom will carry top weight of 126 pounds. He comes heralded by his smashing victory in the mud at Saratoga in the Grand Union Hotel Stakes, a game pace-making effort in the Pimlico Futurity and a brilliant winter campaign against older horses in the New Orleans sector. Renaissance should prove an able running mate. He won four races in good juvenile company last summer and is just rounding to peak form. Lucky Tom has the speed of the race, but Renaissance will be running powerfully at the end. Cathop, half-brother of Mike Hall, racing Continued on second vage. With the lone exception of Lucky Tom and Renaissance, J. J. Robinsons campaigners, the best of the three-year-olds seen under colors here this winter are named to start in the second running of the ,000 added Derby Trial Handicap, featuring Saturdays program at the Fair Grounds. Entries for the fixture number eight and the field is the best brought together in this division since the Jefferson Derby, in which Lucky Tom won over one mile from Springsteel and others, Barring a break in weather, the three-year-olds, all out to qualify for the 0,000 added Louisiana Derby, to be run for the first time at the Louisiana Jockey Club course March 19, closing day of the Fair Grounds meeting and local 1931-32 season, will meet under excellent conditions and their matching of speed and staying qualities may be witnessed by one of the largest crowds of the winter. Sazerac, the swift son of Westy Hogan, will attempt to win the trial honors under 118 pounds, top weight. He will concede three pounds to Springsteel, seven to Jimmy Sutro, eight to Crystal Prince, and more to each of the others. Sazerac has accounted for his last three engagements. He will be ridden by C. Landolt and will rule one of the choices. Bertjohn, which gets in under 108 pounds, and Springsteel, also have big followings for the race and Jimmy Sutro and Crystal Prince will not be overlooked. In final "blowouts" for the race, Sazerac, Bertjohn, Prince Farthing and Springsteel exhibited good speed on a fast track this morning. The former went three-eighths in :36 handily, Bertjohn a like distance in :36 Continued on second page. HIALEAH PARK FINALE Continued from first page. - for R. M. Eastman of Chicago, will carry the solid support of the West. Then there is the one filly of the field, George D. Wideners Evening. There are the ones that have attracted the greatest amount of attention. Should all eight go to the post, as is expected, the Derby will have a gross value of 3,750 and its net value to the winner will be ,975. George D. Wideners Evening, the only filly in the race, received a final workout of three furlongs in :36 in the heavy going this morning. The daughter of St. James is the lightweight in the field with 113 pounds and comes to the Derby with four straight local victories, including a triumph over a crack band of older horses in the Highweight Handicap. G. W. Ogles Trombone, one of the most improved of his age in these parts, wound up his preliminaries with a slow gallop this morning. E. A. Iglehearts Bay Angon went three furlongs in .39 and Preston Burchs Thursday stepped a half mile in :51.
