STAR IN THE EMBRYO Caerleon, Son of Sir Gallahad III. Fairy Wand, Makes Debut; . Colt, Supposedly "Touched in Wind," Scores Most Impressive Victory of Florida Season. - MIAMI, Fla., March 9. A maiden race attracted the" most attention, at least from the horsemen, at Tropical Park this afternoon, for it marked the first racing performance of Caerleon, the son of Sir Gallahad III. Fairy Wand, that races for William A. Porter. This handsome big bay simply toyed with his rivals and though he broke next to last in the field of twelve, was winner by ten lengths and Pete Walls had him under restraint as he crossed the line. This is the colt that was sold to H. C. Phipps at the auction of the horses of the late Gifford A. Cochran, but was later turned back on the charge that he was touched in the wind. Mr. Phipps had paid 0,000 for him. He was not raced last year for the reason he was growing too fast and as good a judge as Henry McDaniel has declared that he might easily be the best three-year-old of this season. Fairy Wand, his dam, gave to racing both Genie and Epithet, while Sir Gallahad HI. is the sire of the mighty Gallant Fox, which swept ah before him as a three-year-old. Rain during the forenoon and threat of rain all afternoon had an effect on the attendance aandd brought some scratches, but the sport was excellent .though platers dominated the card. OUTCLASSES RIVALS. Ife was J. O. Keenes Sancroft, which was " a distant second to Caerleon in the running of the maiden dash, that introduced the good son of Sir Gallahad IH. and T. P. Mills Strategy finished third. The start was a good one, but Caerleon broke next to last in the field. Walls had to shake him up and he was fortunate to find his way through on the inside. When settled in his stride he fairly ran over his opponents and before the short run outof the back stretch had been completed, he was showing the way. Once safely in command Walls took the big fellow in hand and he simply cantered along for the remainder of the journey and was well in hand crossing the line. The race was run in 1:13 and Caerleon was timed separately in 1:12, which gives an idea of the ground he made up in the early stages. He finished out the gallop in a fashion to. indicate that he would go on as far as any horse and while there was not much back of him, no more impressive victory has been scored during the Florida season. Porter, for whom the colt performed, said after the running that while Caerleon is not eligible for the Kentucky Derby, he is engaged in the Preakness as well as the Withers, Wood Memorial, Dwyer, Travers, Empire City Derby and the Stanley Produce Stakes, to be run at Woodbine. FRETWORK EASILY. Fretwork, the juvenile daughter of Peter Pan and Skylight, which races for C. V. Whitney, was an easy winner of the half-mile dash that was the first offering when she cut out all the pace to win in hand. A; B. Gallahers Whirling finished second, with R. L. Gerrys Jackknife just saving third from Strait" Jacket. The start was a good one, though Tuffy Doe, after causing some trouble, broke in the air and had, no chance. Robertson had Fretwork off fast and she quickly went into the lead with Whirling chasing after her and they always held the others perfectly safe. At the end Robertson had Fretwork still in hand to have her home first by three lengths, and Whirling was a full "five lengths back of Jackknife, which finished strongly to be third over Strait Jacket in the closing strides. The third race was another six furlongs dash for maiden three-year-olds, and a split of the dash that introduced Caerleon. This gave Robertson a double when he brought Mose Lowensteins Move Along home the winner under a long drive over F. E. Moores Home Work, and Mrs. Forest Allens Aliens saved third from Fauquiers Pride rather easily. In this it was Aliens that cut out the running. Showing alertness at the start, he was sent away into a long lead, but Move Along was soon in second place chasing after her, and Fauquiers Pride was heading the others. Aliens held to her lead through the back stretch and she was apparently going so easily that Robertson went to the whip on Move Along and he had to Continued on thirteenth vaae.l p . t t 1 i t j STAR IN THE EMBRYO Continued from first page. drive vigorously to have the daughter of Whiskalong draw up on the pacemaker. Once alongside, Move Along soon went into the lead, but she had to be hustled to be over the line the winner by three parts of a length. Home Work saved ground in the stretch and, closing with a rush along the inside, he also ran down Aliens to take second place by two lengths, and Fauquiers Pride was four lengths back of Aliens.
