GRAND NATIONAL PROSPECTS Thirty-Eight Remain Eligible for Worlds Most Famous Jumping Race Grackle Favorite. Special Cablegram. LONDON, England, March 9. There will be not more than thirty-eight starters in the Grand National Steeplechase renewal at Aintree, Liverpool, March 18. The final acceptance fee of approximately 50 was paid yesterday for that many candidates. The stake closed January 5, last, with fifty-eight entries. Seven of these were declared out of the classic on the first acceptance date three weeks later, and now thirteen more have fallen by the wayside. Conspicuous among the latest defections are John Hay Whitneys Sir Lindsay, which went amiss in training a fortnight ago, and Capt. C. N. BrownhUTs ; Drintyre. Others officially withdrawn yesterday were Impudent Barney, Gate Book, Wrethem, Easy Virtue, Oxclose, Possible, Gold Punch, Smokey Moke, Fair Richard and Ballyhan-wood. The following were declared out of it previously: Colliery Band, Kakushin, West Indies, Solanum, All Over, D. D. B.. and Relation.. Thirteen of the possible starters are owned by American sportsmen. They are R. K. Mellons Alike and Glangesia, M. D. Blairs Aruntius, Prince Cherry and Great Span, John Drakes Coup de Chateau, J. B. Snows Delarue, John Hay Whitneys Dusty Foot, R. P. Wardens Harewood, Mrs. C. S. Bird, Jr.s Heartbreak Hill, H. G. Selfridges Ruddyman, A. H. Niblacks Sea Soldier and J. Metcalfes Theras. At the call over at the Victoria Club yesterday odds against the favorite, Grackle, were slightly shorter. The ten-year-old jumper that won the Grand National last year in record time was quoted at 8 to 1. The lightly weighted Remus was second choice at 10 to 1.
