SMALLMAN LEADS AT HAVANA ! Horses of Canadian Owner Earn 7,615 at Oriental Park. Mrs. Emll Denemark Second Lady Broadcast Heads Money Winning Horses J. Gilbert Heads the Riders. The Havana-American Jockey Club, operating Oriental Park, Havana, Cuba, distributed the sum of 84,335 among the winning owners during its long eighty-day meeting, from December 19, 1931, to March 13, 1932. This was a daily average distribution of ,054.19. Five hundred and fifty-two races were decided, a great many of them of the stake class. Lady Broadcast, Herbert M. Woolfs brilliant mare, journeyed from Miami to Havana to start in the Cuban Grand National and, scoring in the race, earned through that one victory ,950, sufficient to make her the leading money-winning horse of the meeting. Fortunate Youth, winner of two races, second in three others and third in one, earned ,580 and was second to Lady Broadcast in the money winners column. Vacillate, Bather, Monks First and Dea raced well and earned more than ,000 each. J. E. Smallman, Canadian owner, and Mrs. Emil Denemark, Chicago sportswoman, staged a close fight for money-winning honors among the owners, with Smallmans racers being the more successful, winning twenty-three races and 7,615, while Mrs. Denemark s horses scored fifteen times and won 6,575. Wood F. Axton, George Collins, S. S. Friedlein, G. F. Jenkins, A. G. Tarn, F. J. Vollmer and H. M. Woolf all fared well in respect to money winnings. G. Alexandra, training the horses of J. E. Smallman, took the training honors with twenty-three winning horses. G. F. Jenkins . saddled seventeen winners and O. L. Foster and J. R. Harmon fifteen each. R. T. Watts also sent fifteen winners to the post. J. Gilbert was in a class by himself among the jockeys, riding eighty-two of his 376 mounts to victory and leading the riders at Marianao by an overwhelming margin.
