DERBY CANDIDATES ACTIVE Knebelkamp, Wilkerson, Respess Eligibles Working- Well at Douglas Park. LOUISVILLE, Ky., March 17. Despite the lack of the most ideal training conditions, trainers at Douglas Park took up a more ambitious streak with their Derby candidates than for some days and have lengthened out their trials to six furlongs in some instances. The cushion on the track at the Highland Park course is more pronounced than at the Downs and the conditioners of these representatives in the Derby have let their charges step livelier than at the older track. Delivered, W. F. Knebelkamps candidate, has a half mile to his credit at the Downs in :54 and Epidemic, owned by H. Wilkerson, was timed by his owner in the same time for a like distance, but J. B. Respess Our Fancy, at Douglas Park, breezed a half mile in :53. The Fair Stables Sweeping Light has fully recovered from a slight indisposition he suffered from some time back and is well advanced in his Derby work, having shown a six furlong trial in 1:19, while Knebelkamp and Morris Adobe Post turned a like distance in 1:21. Both these colts were stake winners last year and if they retain the good form shown in 1931, will be formidable contenders for the Derby, despite the presence of such outstanding juveniles of last year as Top Flight, Tick On, Faireno and Burning Blaze. Indications point to a break in the severe cold spell that has been a drawback to training operations for over a week and with the return of more spring-like weather there will be much activity among the trainers of Derby candidates. There is ample time to get the colts, fillies and geldings, which are eligible to the classic, in apple pie order, if moderately fair weather prevails until the running of the race on Saturday, May 7.
