MATE HEADS BOSTWICK STRING Star Four-Year-Old Expected at Pimlico Sunday. Proteus New York Sportsmans Hope for Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes Yarn Returns. HAVRE DE GRACE, Md March 17. Mate, four-year-old bay son of Prince Pal and Killashandra, one of the largest money winning thoroughbreds in American turf history with 73,425, is the star of the stable of twenty-three horses Albert C. Bost-wick, of New York, will race during the thirteen-day spring meeting of the Harford Agricultural and Breeders Association, beginning April 16. The Bostwick string is due at Pimlico Sunday from Aiken, S. C. Owner Bostwick, who personally trained his string during the winter, made Pimlico his headquarters, due to his having several steeplechasers in his barn, which he would be unable to train here. However, his flat runners, including Mate, are well engaged in the various stakes here next month and will be vanned over on the days they are scheduled to race. Mate, according to numerous horsemen who saw him being tightened up in South Carolina, has filled out during the winter and looks even better than he did a year ago when he accounted for such stakes as the Preakness, American Derby, Arlington Classic, Kenner, Stanley Produce, Bowie Handicap and Thanksgiving Day Handicap at Bowie. Included in the Bostwick string, which is due to race here next month, is Yarn, one that returned last year after a trip to Europe. Before going overseas Yarn was rated, among this countrys top-notch distance runners and it is reasonable to expect owner "Bostwick holds the same high opinion of him. otherwise he wouldnt be in training. Another outstanding performer in Jthe Bostwick stable is Proteus, bay son of Infinite and Our Option, which is an eligible for both the 0,000 Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Proteus, winner of the Idle Hour, Bash-ford Manor and Thomas Curran Memorial Stakes a year ago, may prove the dark horse of this years three-year-old division. Scuttle, which is certain to have something vital to say this season in regard to stakes for mares, is another thoroughbred in the Bostwick string that is well worth remembering. She wintered well and her owner has just as high hopes for her among her own kind as he has for Mate and Proteus. Bostwick, one of this countrys most popular sportsmen, finished third among Americas list of money winning owners a year ago with 25,025. While no announcement has been made as yet, it is understood that George Ellis will do the bulk of the riding for Bostwick. Ellis rode Mate to several of his important victories last year and during the winter severed his connections with the W. J. Zieg-ler, Jr., stable, for whom he rode last year.
