TANFORAN BUILDS NEW BARN More Space Required by Owners Planning to Race There. 4 Judge Murphy Notifies Jockeys Agents Association Will Look After All Riders Engagements in Future. . SAN BRUNO, Calif., March 26. The stabling capacity of Tanforan is being enlarged to the extent of thirty or forty stalls. This announcement has been made by Ralph C. MacArthur, resident-manager of the Pacific Coast Breeders Association, under which organization the San Bruno oval next Thursday will open its 1932 spring meeting. The session will last for thirty-nine days. A new cottage barn will go up immediately. MacArthur and superintendent Jack Dennis Thursday morning thoroughly inspected the space west of the tavern. This open area, approximately 200 feet in length and 150 feet in width, heretofore has been used for a "walking ring," where thoroughbreds are cooled out after coming off the track from a workout or breeze. It is an ideal location and will increase the stabling room of Tanforan to over 900 stalls. The addition of the new barn will be good news to several late applicants for stabling room. Many of these were turned down because of the lack of stalls within the race track. However, arrangements were made by the owners and trainers to stable outside at nearby farms. During the last two meetings this has been necessary, due to the heavy influx of thoroughbreds. The 1932 spring meeting is the most strongly supported in the way of thoroughbreds. About 1,100 horses can be had if the association can find stabling room. So far about nine hundred have been taken care of and either are at the track, at near-by farms or on their way from winter quarters and campaigning. A direct blow at the jockeys agents, the men who secure mounts for riders and are paid the sums of for a losing mount and for a winning mount, has been dealt by the association. The information is contained in a statement issued Thursday by judge Joseph A. Murphy. The statement follows : "No jockeys agents will be permitted to ply their vocation at the Tanforan meeting, opening March 31. The association has employed John Maluvius to look after all engagements of free lance riders whose contract employers or the trainer of the stable is not present to care for. "The jockeys agents have bepome a nuisance around race tracks and the management believes by taking this expense away from the riders and keeping a strict jurisdiction over them through the association employe, better results will be obtained. "No jockey will be forced to ride a horse when his contract employer objects to the mount and every effort will be made to see that the better class of riders secure horses that have a chance in the race. "The system has been tried out at other tracks with success and the Tanforan management believes that the plan is distinctly a forward step. "The practice of jockeys agents charging a rider for each mount which is obtained for him is becoming distasteful to officials at practically every race track in the country and it is likely that some definite plan for abolishing the practice will be adopted." signed "Judge Joseph A. Murphy. Director of Racing." Another major improvement will be the charging of a license fee to trainers and L jockeys this year. The proceeds will be set ; aside and used to care for injured or sick riders and indigent trainers. Heretofore, - Tanforans association has spent in excess 1 of .,000 in caring for the sick and injured of the race track, particularly riders hurt in races; also for the maintenance of an ambulance and doctor at the track during the entire season. The track, recently resurfaced, is at its 5 best dry condition. It has plenty of cushion L and spring to it, giving thoroughbreds with 1 weak underpinning a better course to race 5 on.
