ACCIDENT MARS FEATURE RACE ♦ JFrio of Horses Go Down at Sportsmans Park. 4 Parties, Harum Scarum and Mike Carey Fall — Port o Play Wins — Jockey Pierce Injured. ♦ CICERO, 111., May 7.— An accident, in which Parties, Harum Scarum and Mike Carey fell, marred the fifth race, called the Chicago Purse, which featured todays card at Sportsmans Park. Parties, with jockey R. Allen up, was the first to go down as they approached the lower turn soon after the start and Harum Scarum and Mike Carey, which were following in close pursuit, fell over her. Port o Play accounted for the winners share, but only after gaining much ground in a stubborn duel with Bernice Van, which was fortunate in escaping the fall. The latter raced into a long early lead, but after reaching the stretch turn the last time around, gave signs of tiring, and gave way to the winner in the late stages. Satin Spinner, which was given a rather timid ride by apprentice W. Privett, who repeatedly pulled his mount up, was the one to finish third, while the aged Arabian took the short end of the purse. Jockey Pierce appeared to be the worst injured of the trio of riders that fell, while R. Allen and E. Gross were slightly shaken up. A crowd of about 12,000, surpassing that of opening day, was on hand. Heavy overnight rains made the track muddy and performers partial to the soft going accounted for the majority of the races. Pollys Folly proved much the best of the platers that contested the introductory dash. Overcoming sharp interference going to the first turn, the winner was last in the field of ten, but in the run through the back stretch she moved up with a great burst of speed and, continuing gamely, wore down Ada Epinard to win in a canter. The latter set a fast early pace, but tired when put to pressure, though saving second with ease from Giblets. A good ride by jockey R. Allen was the principal factor in the triumph of the Battle Axe Stables Monnie, which scored in a driving finish with Take Off, while third fell to My Beauty. r— , =
