LARGE FIELDS AT BELMONT 1 Unusual Number of Starters in Races at Famous Course. » . Dark Secret Romps to Victory in Islip Tune —Point Breeze Disqualified in Steeplechase Race. ♦ NEW YORK, N. Y., May 16.— Dark Secret, from the Wheatley Stable, was an easy winner of the Islip Purse at Belmont Park today. This was a seven-furlong race that occupied the featured position on a program that was remarkable for large fields more than anything else. The summer-like weather and fast track brought out a big Monday crowd, and although there was no real feature down for decision, there was plenty of interest in the card. The steeplechase of the day was marred by a bit of fouling that brought the disqualification of Point Breeze after he had finished third. This was won by Heather, a gelding imported from Ireland, which raced for J. F. Howe, but the triumph was only made possible by the foul for which Point Breeze was disqualified. In the Islip Purse only five sta i ted, and it was James Butlers Forewarned that raced to second place, with Bectoi. from the Colony Stable, saving third from Frank Grossmans Waterway. The big surprise of the race was the miserable performance of Snap Back, the starter that bore the silks of the Brookmeade Stable. This was his first start of the season, but on his form of last year and his training reports he was considered as one of the dependable horses of the day. He was utterly devoid of speed and finished last. Kelsay sent Dark Secret into a safe lead in the first furlong, and the son of Flying Ebony was at no time threatened. Romping along well clear of the others, he was under restraint to win by four lengths. Forewarned was at all times second and was never threatened for that part of the purse when he beat Bectoi by two lengths. Waterway was at the heels of the son of Achtoi and then came Snap Back, easing up six lengths back. Twenty-four maiden three-year-olds went to the post in the opening three-quarters dash over the Widener course. It brought about a close finish, in which Mrs. Olive Curtis Wise Money lasted to score over Joseph E. Wideners Well Played, with the Mereworth Stud Stables Panax just saving third from Star Scattered. J. F. Byers Heather was a lucky winner of the short-course selling steeplechase when he led the Foxcatcher Farms Stables Fair Moss and William Almy, Jr.s Point Breeze over the line. It was a lucky victory for the reason that, after aking the last jump, Point Breeze was disqualified for fouling, and Blabber moved up to third position. There were three casualties in the running when Bo Ballot was pulled up after the water jump, Khaybaby fell at the front of the liverpool and Friar McGee unseated Goodwin at the eighth fence. Laufjunge also could be added to the list for, while he finished the course, he came out of the running badly lame. Henry McDaniel showed a good filly from the Joseph E. Widener stable when he saddled Crazy Jane in the Graceful Purse, a four and a half furlong dash over the Widener course, for fillies. It was the first start for the daughter of Haste and Natica, a daughter of Stefan the Great, and she at least demonstrated that she has inherited fine speed. At the end there were four in close alignment, with the place going to Mrs. Sadie Bennetts Via Appia, which was closely attended by the Greentree Stables Lazy Daisy and C. V. Whitneys Volette. A double for the Wheatley Stable silks was registered when in the mile of the fifth race, Hank Mills, with a well judged ride, landed Lucky Jack the winner over Joseph Edwards Merrily On, while Mrs. John A. Co-burns Daily News was a close third well before Contribute. It was a twenty horse field of plater juveniles that met in the closing four and a half furlongs dash. This brought a spirited contest, in which R. A. Smiths Chief Daunt was winner over James E. Gaffneys Ador-land, with H. C. Phipps Golden Words the one to be third.
