SPECTACULAR RIDING Wills and Coucci Entertain Aqueduct Patrons With Thrilling Finishes. jSach Earn a Nose Decision, With the More Important Victory Going to Little Italian. NEW YORK, N. Y., June 21 "Hank" Mills and Sylvio Coucci, the accomplished light weight apprentices, treated the racing iprowd at Aqueduct today to two thrilling finishes and the score was even when each yarned a nose decision. The Coucci score vas the more important when he brought Mrs. George M. Seglins Cutie Face home the winner over H. C. Phipps Balios in the JWoodhaven Claiming Stakes. This had a net yalue of ,125 to the winner and it was Mrs. W. T. Andersons Merry Caroline that paved third. The other nose finish between the pair came in the mile of the second race when Mills just had Marcasite winner by inches lover Make Haste, ridden by Coucci. Weather and track conditions were excellent for the sport and a goodly crpwd was in attendance. It was the first application of the federal tax of ten per cent .on all badges and this caused a bit of confusion in the buying of tax tickets at the gate, but ;will be taken care of smoothly in the future. In the meantime a ruling has been had from Washington which exempted the owners and trainers as well as the jockeys, though the owners and trainers were charged the tax for the sport today. DELAY AT POST. There was some delay at the post for the Woodhaven, but the start was a good one. Coucci rushed Cutie Face away and she and Merry Caroline were the ones to force most of the pace. Balios was closely following these two and in the final eighth he moved jup on Cutie Face, disposing of the Anderson filly and swinging alongside the daughter of jChilhowee. All through the closing stages these two fought it out desperately and the filly still had her nose in front at the line. Balios had beaten Merry Caroline a length arid it was Revonah that was fourth, but lour lengths away. 1 Lee Rosenbergs Kerry Patch, disqualified In a previous race, was rather an easy winner of the opening dash. This was a six furlong dash for the juveniles and the son fof Desperate Desmond was good enough to dominate all the running and win by a jgoodly margin over W. R. Coes Orphean, Sivhile J. A. Coburns filly Eva B. saved third Easily from John J. Robinsons Eisenberg. Back of this colt came Lough Port and JAeraway. MARCASITE SCORES. Two of the cheapest of platers furnished a rare thrill in the second race at one mile when "Hank" Mills, on Mrs. Clyde Phillips Marcasite, and Coucci, on J. A. Coburns Make Haste, hooked up in a desperate stretch duel. They finished in the order named with both of the light weight apprentices riding furiously. Make Haste had .come from behindthe Runantell filly and he gave desperate battle, but still a nose short of victory at the line. Far back of these Old Croyden, which at one time raced for Mrs. Vanderbilts Fair Stable, saved third Jn another battle with Louis Strubes Epoch. The start of the third race decided the fevent when Claremont was sent away running in a straggling start. It was an advantage to see him safely home, while Damon Runyons Contribute, plainly a better horse, was a good second, beating the Anall Stables Chickahominy for that part of the purse. Walls made every use of his advantage at the start and, saving ground on the rail, there was nothing back of Claremont .that could overcome the advantage he enjoyed at the break. Chickahominy raced second most of the way, while Contribute, forced to race around on the outside, ran a better race than the winner, but was beaten two lengths. The Belair Studs Faireno will fulfill his engagement in the Shevlin and after the race will be shipped to Latonia to start in the Derby at that point. Jockey W. Prior, who was injured at Bain-bridge Park, was an arrival here. He will be absent from the saddle for another several weeks. Jockey Tommy Malley, acting on orders from the doctor, will be an absentee for several days. His foot and ankle are still pore from the amming received Saturday,
