CLIPSETTA STAKES FIELD Between Fifteen and Twenty to Run in Latonia s Opening Feature. Hilena, Nituma, Esseff, Spartan Lady, Wise Anne, Dominant Miss, Billies Orphan and Others Among the Starters. LATONIA, Ky., June 21. Despite the presence of such highly regarded fillies as the Audley Farms Hilena, Sewell S. Combs Nituma, Charles T. Fishers Esseff and Spar-ton Lady, the Oakland Farms Wise Ann, Thomas Carr Piatts Dominant Miss and F. C. McAtees Billies Orphan, the field that will accept for the fiftieth Clipsetta Stakes, the dash at five and one-half furlongs, that features the opening days program of the thirty-one day Latonia spring meeting Saturday will be one of the largest in the history of the famous old stake. With the aforementioned ones already showing their justly regarded class under colors and in stakes that have been decided during the winter and spring season, there are quite a number of the misses that have yet to round into their best form or tested under colors. From all indications there will be between fifteen and twenty to accept for the stake that carries an added value of ,000. The starting field probably will come from Lovely Hills, Baggage Miss, High Complexion, Ocean Flight, Souer Blanche, Absolution, Advising Anne, Play Lady, Marie Jean, Patsyette, Blondella, Polly Mac, Bright Emblem, Lilac Bloom, Glamorous, Oswego Princess, Red Cinders, Blithe, Lonwin, Murphys Luck, Wise Mona and those already mentioned. While Nituma and Hilena finished first and second, respectively in the Debutante Stakes at Washington Park, Spartan Lady was not so far away from the leaders that she could be classified as outmatched. In addition to the chances of this daughter of Crusader, the Dixiana stable appears to hold a strong hand in the unbeaten Esseff, a home-bred daughter of High Time and La-Belle Helene, which won at both of her askings with consummate ease. She is training in the best of fashion and this morning, in company with Spartan Lady and High Complexion, went five-eighths in 1:02-, breezing. High Complexion, which, although a maiden, Continued on second page. Breaking at the five-eighths pole, they covered the quarter in :23, three-eighths in :35 and the half-mile in :48. Tom Carr Piatt came down from Lexington to witness the work of his Dominant Miss, which won both of her last two starts at Louisville and has been training in the best of fashion since arriving here. She was called on for a trial at five furlongs and going handily all the way, was timed in 1:02. The quarter was covered in :23 and the half in :47. Blondella and Polly Mac, two other eligibles from the the same stable, went a half-mile from the starting machine. Blondella was timed the four furlongs in :48, driving, while Polly Macs time was :49, driving. Wise Mona went a half-mile in :49. Billies Orphan recently demonstrated at Washington Park that she has returned to the form that carried her up among- the leaders during the Florida season. Wise Anne, considered the best two-year-old filly of Florida racing, won at the Homewood course at her first asking since her winter campaign. Billies Orphan, Wise Anne and Hilena are among the eligibles that are ex-pecked from Chicago Wednesday or Thursday morning, while quite a number of the nominees are already quartered here. That the Clipsetta always brings out the best of the fair sex is attested by the winners in the past. Leading two-year-olds of the gentler sex that have the Clipsetta to their, credit are such good ones as Alci-biades, Betty Derr, Sweep Park, Fair Phantom, Miss Jemima, Viva America, Lady Savoy and others. A great many eligibles for the seven stakes, to be decided during the meeting were on the track this morning, with In High breezing an easy five-eighths in 1:07. Coast Patrol and Yarnallton, which Tom Piatt named for the Trophy, went five furlongs in 1:02, driving, while St. Jensund, B. Hickmans candidate, breezed five-eighths in 1:09. Pass Christian, which the Southland Stable made eligible for the Trophy, breezed three-quarters in 1:15, while Joe Schorers Latonia Oaks eligible, Time to Fly, went three-quarters in 1:16, driving.
