CHARLEIGHS FAST RACE t 4 Gallops Mile and a Sixteenth at Hawthorne in 1 :43. c Makes Show of Good Band of Han-- dicap Horses in Days Feature Old Hillside Surprises. CICERO, 111., Aug. 17. Charleigh, good four-year-old from the Superior Stable, proved that owner Bill Schmidt of that racing establishment made a wise investment in purchasing him when he scored an impressive victory in the Eclipse Handicap, feature race on todays program at Hawthorne. Charleigh made a show of a good band of handicap performers to win by himself in the fast time of 1:43 for the mile and a sixteenth distance. He missed the track record by one-fifth of a second in scoring his ninth triumph of the year. Polydorus, racing coupled with Yonkel as the Abe Bartel-stein entry, was second and Mrs. John Hertz Pairbypair finished third. Yonkel was fourth. Charleigh, running the best race that he has shown in the Chicago district, was never extended and won by over four lengths. Jockey C. E. Allen, who was in the saddle, sent the gelding to the front at once and he opened up a good lead cn Pairbypair, his closest competitor, on the "rst turn. In the race down the back stretch he increased his -advantage and with Allen having him under restraint, jogged to the finish the easiest sort of winner. Polydorus had no trouble disposing of Pairbypair in the final drive. Cloudy, humid weath :r prevailed this afternoon, but the well balanced program that was down for decision drew a crowd .which compared favorably with that of yesterday. The track was fast. DUG IN GRADUATES. Dug In, purchased by his present owners, the Jersey Stable, from the W. R. Coe sale at Arlington Park, further added to the glory of Pompey, promising young sire and earned a purse for his owners when he graduated in the opening race. Well ridden by jockey Remillard, the colt saved much ground around the far turn to reach contending place and bested Drombo when it came to a drive through the stretch. His winning margin was a good nose, as Drombo, which made most of the pace, held on gamely. Monks Dude was third in the twelve-horse field. The winner was an outsider. , Eight fairly good sprinters met in a six furlong battle in the second race and Camp Boss emerged victorious in a wild finish. The winner and Flag Time made the pace, but both weakened in the run home and Out Bound, which had been a trailer in the early stages, would have won in a few more strides. As it was he finished second, while Flag Time was third. When the break came Camp Boss and Flag Time set out to make the pace, while Out Bound, lacking early speed, was shuffled back. After going half the distance Out Bound began to come fast and was inning strongly in the stretch when he found himself blocked. Jockey Allen had no alternative but to take up and go to the outside, which he did, and once in the clear, Out Bound fairly flew after his fivals. His move was too late, however, and he missed by a neck. OLD HILLSIDE EASDLY. Trainer Wayne Lewis woke up another of the Wood Axton horses in the third race when Old Hillside, which has been racing poorly of late, was an easy winner over a large band of two-year-olds. After leading most of the way, Old Hillside won by over two lengths and paid 0.58. Second money went to Our Justic, a field horse, while Mr. Joe was third. Meloy, the well backed favorite, met with early interference and could never get to the leaders. A bad jam occurred soon after the start of this race and Go Fetch and Uncle Donald were practically eliminated. The distance was six furlongs. Siskin, handy four-year-old son of Epinard, showed an improved effort today when he ran the fastest six furlongs of the meeting to win the fourth race. His time for the distance was 1:12 and he defeated Pancho Lopez by one length, while Sundot was third. .The other starters, Minton and Brown Wisdom, wer Close up at the finish. From an excellent start, Pancho Lopez, one of the Continued on twenty-first page.J CHARLEIGHS FAST RACE Continued from first page. fastest beginners performing here, went to the front and, with Siskin and Minton close up, set a good pace down the back stretch. After turning for home Siskin began to move up slightly and in the final furlong he wore down the Superior Stable speedster to win going away. Minton was on the outside of the leaders in the stretch and tired, while Brown Wisdom was pocketed early. Siskin was the favorite. Bar Hunter, after winning five straight races, went down to defeat in the sixth race. He was made an odds-on choice, but his performance did not warrant the confidence placed in him. He was in close quarters on the back stretch when Smith, apparently attempting to rate him on the inside, refused to send him to the front of Uluniu and as a consequence he was shuffled back approaching the stretch turn and lost his opportunity. Watch Him carried the Hertz colors to a surprise victory in the event. Badly beaten by much cheaper animals in previous starts, he came to life today and, with jockey Steff en also showing signs of life, was hustled to the front and was never headed, winning easily. Kincsen raced to second place a nose in advance of Impish. C. J. Casey shipped fourteen horses of the Le Mar Stock Farm to Saratoga Wednesday: Among them was the stake winner Marooned. Jockey Willie Garner returned from Dade Park and will resume riding shortly. Mrs. John D. Hertz good filly Risque was excused from the fourth race today because of soreness.
