JAMES E. GAFFNEY DEAD Popular Eastern Sportsman, Owner of Racing Stable for Many-Years, Victim of Stroke. SARATOGA SPRINGS, Ni T"., Aug. 17.- Genuine regret was expressed here when word was received of the death of James E. Gaffney, the popular sportsman and contractor at his home East Hampton, Long Island. Mr. Gaffney had been identified with racing for many years and of late his colors had been carried by several good thoroughbreds including Irenes Bob, Ador-land and others. He was in his sixty-third year and had been ailing for the past few months, and Sunday evening was the victim of a stroke. The last rites of the Catholic Church were administered and the immediate members of" his family were summoned to his bedside. During the Empire City meeting he recovered quickly following a brief illness and his arrival at Saratoga was expected the latter part of this week. The body will be removed to his New York City home, 950 Park Avenue, from where the funeral services will be conducted. Interment will be announced later. In addition to his interests in. racing, he at one time owned the Boston Braves baseball club when they marched from last place to a pennant in 1914;
