RAIN FALLS AT THISTLE DOWN Traek Is Changed to Sloppy After Running of First Race. . Crowned Head Makes Strong Finish to Beat -Out Wise Maid Sir Dean Gets Up in Closing Strides. CLEVELAND, Ohio, Aug. 17. Track conditions changed at Thistle Down today after the running of the first race, but the rain which fell to make the course sloppy did not affect results to the extent of causing upsets. Conditions proved to be entirely suitable to Sir Dean in the fourth race and Crowned Head in the fifth. Crowned Head made it . two straight by winning the fifth, at a mile and a sixteenth. He closed fast on the outside of the others, overtaking Wise Maid, which, after relink, quishing the lead, had enough left to Outstay the others. Happy Lad finished fast, also on the outside, and managed to beat out Gertrude Reade. The attendance was of mid-week proportions. Jockey J. demons piloted his second winner when he brought Sir Dean from the rear with a well timed rush to head White Knee in the closing strides of the fourth event. White Knee set the pace from the start, withstood a bold bid from Black Feather when straightened out, and held on with rare courage. Black Feather barely saved third from St. Mica, which closed resolutely . next to the inner rail. James Bronnenbergs Odd Star led home his opposition by a wide margin in the opening dash, scoring with much to spare. Phara and Cliftons Queen followed the winner a length apart in this order for the entire trip. Sunny Sideup was never a serious factor. At home in the sloppy going, Great Artist; registered his second successive victory here, having a comfortable lead throughout, in the second race. The French Rose was always in closest pursuit of the winner.. In the final test, Friar gained the third award in a drive from Sun Worship. Silver Wave tired rapidly after showing a flash of early speed. After many threatening efforts, Santerno finally graduated from the. ranks of maidens: when he closed stoutly next to the inner rail and wore down Silent Vote during the last hundred yards of the third race. Silent Vote Set the pace, but bore out. slightly while rounding the stretch turn. Northern Sir raced over the others to secure the minor award during the last quarter-mile.
