MR. KHAYYAM BIG SURPRISE Outruns Good Band of Juveniles in Laurel Headliner. Poppyman Second In Manor Purse Huffy Winner of Steeplechase Good Weather Prevails. LAUREL, Md., Oct. 14. Mr. Khayyam carried the silks of the Catawba Stable to a well earned victory in the Manor Purse here this afternoon. Back of him came six of the candidates for the Spaulding Lowe Jenkins Stakes, as well as two fillies that are engaged in the rich Selima Stakes. Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Poppyman was the one to race second and William Zeigler, Jr.s Keep. Out was a close third before C. V. Whitneys Stepsister. Both Popyman and Keep Out are eligibles for the Jenkins and each performed well back of the winner. The race run by Keep Out was particularly meritorious for the reason that he had a rough race and was forced to lose considerable ground. Another delightful day and an interesting card brought out a big crowd and there was much interest in the sport. There was some delay in the Manor for which Mr. Khayyam arid Royal Blunder were to blame, but the start was a good one and Poppyman was a bit more alert than the others in the short run to the first turn. He was closely attended by Mr. Khayyam and Jungle King, while Keep Out was caught in close quarters and buffeted about badly, causing Elston to take up to prevent an accident. Poppyman swung into the back stretch with a lead of a length over Mr. Khayyam, with Hanford restraining the son of Omar Khayyam. Jungle King, racing on the outside, was only another half length back arid he was also going along under a steady pull and Northgalis was right after the Green-tree colt. Poppyman held his lead readily until well Into the stretch, but Hanford was waiting patiently back of him with Mr. Khayyam and he made no serious bid until around the last turn. Jungle King had tired of the chase, but Keep Out had moved up on the outside and was gaining resolutely when carried out rather badly turning for home. Then at the furlong post Hanford called on Mr. Khayyam and the colt, responding, was soon alongside Poppyman and then past to open up a lead that carried him over the line winner by two lengths. Keep Out was finishing with a great rush on the outside, but he could not quite reach Poppyman, which had saved second place by a head.
