THE DARB WINS KENTUCKY JOCKEY CLUB STAKES 9 1 Caesars Ghost Extends C. V. Whitney Colt and Is Second by Neck Dynastic, Greentree Stable Colorbearer and Favorite, Finishes Third Weight and Track Conditions Severe Test for Youngsters Over the Mile Distance : LATONIA, Ky., Oct. 29. Under a particularly strong and excellent ride by A. Robertson, The Darb, sturdy bay son of St. Germans and Maud Muller, triumphed in the thirteenth renewal of the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes here today. The victorious C. V. Whitney representative scored in a driving finish and by a neck over Mrs. I. D. .Sloaries Caesars Ghost, while Dynastic, favorite, provided by Mrs. Payne Whitney, finished third, I three lengths back and with as much of an advantage over H. P. Headlevs TprTinfmi 3 which led Charley O., Thistle Play and Glyn-son into fourth place. The race,, worth 9,-945 to the owner of the winner, was over one mile, and the good two-year-olds had to race over as heavy and holding a track as has prevailed here in several years. With their weight up, it was a real test of the stamina of the seven youngsters and the winner was warmly acclaimed upon his return to the winners ring following the contest. In addition to the prize money, the victory carried a handsome silver trophy and in the absence of Mr. Whitney, it was accepted by J. A. Healey, trainer of the Whitney thoroughbred. The presentation was made by Polk Laffoon, head of the Latonia Jockey Club. ROBERTSONS QUICK THINKING. Swift thinking by Robertson on the first turn, little more than a furlong after the start, which was at the sixteenth post, appeared the key factor in The Darbs success. After rushing the Whitney colt through on the inside of Caesars Ghost, Technique and Thistle Play, Robertson sent him along until he was clear of his company. With a good margin gained, The Darb was taken under restraint and rated along to the final quarter, with Caesars Ghost always in closest pursuit, and Technique and Thistle Play waging a furious contest for third place. Swinging into the last quarter, Robertson briskly shook up the victor, but at the same time Caesars Ghost rallied to pressure, and Dynastic, which C. Kurtsinger brought up on the inside, took possession of third place. In the short stretch to the temporary finish at the sixteenth post, Caesars Ghost steadily narrowed the winners margin and with the latter tiring badly in the .late stages, all but wore him down. Dynastic was unable to seriously press the leaders, yet widely outstayed Technique. Dynastic was the favorite. In addition to the large purse that fell to the Whitney Stable, the race carried second money in the amount of ,000, while ,000 went to third, and ,000 to fourth. Nominators of the first three horses divided ,800. LARGE CROWD PRESENT. Decided under sunny skies, the feature and supporting races were witnessed by one of the largest crowds of the meeting. The usual contingents from Louisville, Indianapolis, Lexington and the Blue Grass country were on hand, and many of greater Cincinnatis more prominent sports lovers were in the clubhouse and box sections. The weather was a bit cool, with a brisk wind blowing, and topcoats and warm wraps were very comfortable. The inconsistent Donday sprinted to vic- tory in the three-quarters race that opened the program. Although George South got him away from the post none too well, the successful Camarone gelding was so much the best that he easily overcame the early loss of ground to his rivals and ran home three lengths before Fort Worth. The latter was a strong factor all the way and Sabina H. charged from far back with a belated rush to garner third over the well supported Radio Announcer, which tired badly after leading to the stretch. The trying track well suited Bianoz and he graduated from the maiden ranks with a victory over eleven others from among the juveniles in the second race, also at three-quarters. E. Pool had the winner in front throughout and, urging him vigorously most of the way, brought him under the wire with little effort, although his final margin over Baggage Master was only four lengths. Third went to Quick Verdict and .Continued on twenty-second pagel. THE DARB WINS KENTUCKY JOCKEY CLUB STAKES Continued from first page. he was strongest of the three leaders In the concluding stages. Dull performances were, turned in by Simon and Foxey Burt second and third choices. Shortly after tha start Terry Lad stumbled, unseating J. Smith, who escaped unhurt. For the third time in as many starts during the meeting, Balderdash finished in second position when Gibbys Choice proved too good for him at the three-quarters distance in the third race. Balderdash got to the lead entering the stretch, but tha eventual winner came on too fast and when Balderdash grew weary in the late stages beat him by slightly more than a length. Abe Furst was third and Booster Twist next, with eight starting. Balderdash ruled favorite. Partisan took down his second purse at the meeting for H. C. Hatch, Canadian patron, when he outstayed High Storm, Seths Ballot and others at the mile and one-quarter distance in the fourth race. It was a popular victory as the winner found strong backing and went to the post favorite. For seven-eighths G. Riley rated the Hatch gelding close to High Storms pace and, heading the latter at the stretch turn, came on to win by three-quarters of a length. High Storm landed second place by one length and one-half over Seths Ballot and Blind Hills led the others. In the Carrollton Claiming Purse, which tested six of the top grade platers over one mile and seventy yards, the large crowd was treated to the most thrilling contest and closest finish of the afternoon. Here Peggy Lehmann nosed out Plumage, as Royal Julian drove to the finish third, little more than a. length back. A disappointing performance by Come On marked the race.
