RUFF STUFF REPEATER « Velie and Jones Youngster Gives Another Display of Speed. ♦ Wins Hyacinth Purse at Churchill Downs in Impressive Fashion — Weather Favorable. t LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 18.— Churchill Downs presented one of the best week-day programs of the meeting today and the attractive card was offered under fine conditions. Ideal weather brought out another large crowd and the track was firm and fast. Three of the eight races engaged horses of the higher flights and, while small fields contested in each, they furnished interesting sport. Ruff Stuff, the Missouri-bred son of Blind Play and Catherine Marr, owned by Velie and Jones, gave another display of his speed and possibilities in winning the Hyacinth Purse, for two-year-olds, one of the three principal races. This was a popular victory, as the winner on the strength of his previous impressive and winning efforts was supported almost to the exclusion of the four that opposed him. From a fast start, he found his stride quickly and, after drawing clear in the first eighth, was good enough to lead thereafter. Near the end J. Judy shook him up rather vigorously and the rousing kept him going well enough to win by a length and one-half from H. P. Headley"s Thomas-ville, which in turn outraced the Calumet Farms Our Admiral by three lengths for second place. NO REAL EXCUSES. Aside from adverse racing luck encountered by Brilliant Rose, Ruff Stuffs rivals had no excuses. When in a contending position. Brilliant Rose was forced back and, Whrile she did not seriously threaten thereafter, Our Admiral was only a head better than her at the end. Possibly the bad break cost her third honors. Another of the Calumet Farm two-year-1 olds graduated when Unkie Tom, son of Hol-lister and Lady Sylvia, was victorious over Prince Star, the favorite, and eight other maiden colts and geldings in the opening race. They raced five furlongs and the victor, ridden by C. McCrossen, who brought him from behind the pace, got away with the success in handy style. In the stretch, he slowly wore down Busy Jay and Prince Star and after wresting the lead from the latter, drew away until his final margin was a length and one-half. Faltering badly in the final run, Busy Jay failed to retain a place among the leaders, third going to Hoosiers Pride, which Prince Star beat by a neck for1 second place. The very useful gelding Bichloride, which races for Mrs. G. E. Lewis, added another purse to his earnings when he outsprinted ten other three-year-olds at three-quarters in the second race. Under a nicely-judged ride by E. Porter, he won easily with Whirling second and Voitina third. The favorite, Auf Continued on twenty-second page. RUFF STUFF REPEATOR Continued from first page. Wiedersenn, among several fractious at the post where he suffered a fall, could do no better than attain fourth place from a slow start. Ladykin, which was fifth past ths finish, also took a hard tumble while at ths barrier. The winner ran the distance in the good time of 1:12% and the victory marked his fourth of the Kentucky season. He was second choice in the betting. Howard Stearns, former jockey, saddled the winner of the third race in Gunfire, which easily turned back Quorum, Prince Farthing and seven others. The winner and Quorum made all the running and for five-eighths were in close alignment. After offering stubborn resistance, Quorum found the winner too much and the Stearns veteran drew out near the finish. At the close Quorum was only a nose in the van of Prince Farthing, which closed with a rush down the center of the track, and Broomshot was fourth, well before Betty Farrell, which shared favoritism with Quorum and the winner. .
