TOBOGGAN TO OKAPI Brookmeade Stable Colt Carries Off Belmonts Inaugural Feature. Parry and Good Advice Second and Third, Respectively Green Cheese Wins International. NEW YORK, N. Y May 27. Okapi. the .three-year-old son of Eternal and Oktibbena, carrying the silks of Mrs. Dodge Sloanea Brookmeade Stable, was winner of the Toboggan Handicap at Belmont Park today. Earlier in the day, Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Green Cheese, in a good game finish won the International Steeplechase Handicap. -These were the high lights in a brilliant opening of the Westchester Racing Association meeting at the gorgeous Nassau County course. It was sport that brought out a banner crowd and a representative gathering of sportsmen and sportswomen. The delightful racing ground was at its best and weather conditions could hardly have been improved upon. The Toboggan carried a value of ,515 .to the winner and it was Parry from the Greentree Stable, owned by Mrs. Payne iWhitney which finished second while Good Advice, third at the finish, is the property of Mrs. James Austins Catawba Farm Stable. Thus, it was that the silks of sportswomen dominated the prize. And with the steeplechase it was a fair winner who triumphed in the score of Green Cheese, while second went to her mother-in-law Mrs. Payne Whitney, whose silks were carried by Bangle. There was a long delay at the post in the Toboggan for which Parry was chiefly to blame. The daughter of Peter Pan was taken to the outside in an effort to obtain a start, but later she was returned to her position, and it was Pomp eius that was on .the outside as the barrier was sprung. - A good start was obtained and Good Ad-Vice, breaking from the inside, was more alert than the others. Evening was right .with the son of Wise Counsellor and Pilate was third away, but almost at once, when he did not have speed enough to hold his position, the last named was crowded out of it and shuffled back to last place. Okapi was in the front division and as he found racing room he soon had his head in front. Bellizzi sent the son of Eternal along at his best pace, but under a snug hold and Good Advice was going stride for stride with him. The pair drew out a length and a half before Pompeius, which was racing along on the outside and he was closely attended by Larranaga. The leading pair fought along closely lapped until a furlong from home .when Good Advice tired slightly and Okapi, Tunning straight and true, came away to a lead of a length. The others were driving to the limit back of the three-year-old, but to no avail and he was over the line winner by a length and a half. Bangle, which raced second for the Green-tree Stable, has a degree of seasoning by racing and it was the best race shown by the son of Golden Orb and Nought, while Thomas Hitchcocks Escapade, which was third, gave an excellent account of himself, though used up to some degree by going with the pace.
