CHURCHILL DOWNS NOTES W J Buddy Hirsch son of Max Hirsch renowned owner and trainer who branched out for himself two years ago has thirteen horses at Douglas Park Young Hirsch has seven for his father five for Silas B Mason and one for A C Schwartz For his father he is training the threeyearolds Noctiirn labe and Chinese Empress and the two yearolds Lackay son of Black Servant Happy Flag a daughter of American Flag Dignitory a son of Twink Roman Soldier son of Chort and Lovito a daughter of Vito A juvenile daughter of Royal Minstrel arid aptly named Gay Music will carry the Schwartz colors while Sasieby is the only threeyearold in training for S B Mason For the latter sportsman he has Tee Totum a daughter of Display and Toddle and a half sister to the stakes winners Dr Free land and Swivel Mid Victorian a daughter of Victorian Canary also a daughter of Victorian and Lord Autumn a son of Pen ¬ nant nantC C C Van Meter for a score of years one of the leading western owners and trainers started his 1934 season in good style and in addition to many worthwhile seasoned per ¬ formers he appears well fortified with juve ¬ niles His Bye Lo the first double winner of the Churchill Downs meeting is one if not the best of the younger lot that includes Race Craft Trend Stay Vance My Paa Lo and an unnamed twoyearold filly he is training for John Marr The older brigade comprises the fouryearolds Red Whisk Mr Joe and Fallen while the threeyearolds are Mr James Cotton Club Long Bit Daddy Bill and Cousin Bess BessA A majority of the horses have been made eligible for the Washington Park stakes to which track the stable will be shipped at the close of the Churchill Downs session sessionDerby Derby guests of Dr and Mrs Carl Hender ¬ son of Lexington will be Miss Elizabeth Daingerfield Miss Katherine Herring and Jim Henderson HendersonMr Mr and Mrs Barry Shannon will have as their Derby guests Mr and Mrs Charles Warwick Jr of West Palm Beach Fla Commissioner and Mrs Edward Mulrooney and Jack McKim of New York YorkWilliam William Woodward owner of the great money winner Gallant Fox winner of the 1930 Derby and J H Louchheim whose colors will be carried tomorrow by Speed more will witness the Derby struggle Sir Gallahad HI Frenchbred sire of Gallant Fox is the only sire of a Derby winner represented in tomorrows field Sir Thomas being a son of this great sire sireAlthough Although he has ridden In eight or nine Kentucky Derbys Mack Garner has yet to score his first victory Tomorrow astride Cavalcade he has his greatest chance A native of Iowa Garner began riding twenty years ago He is 35 years of age and was developed on the Kentucky tracks Blue Larkspur King Gorin H Under Fire and Peace Pennant were among his Derby mounts
