KENILWORTH OPENING TODAY Inaugurates Canadian Season Earli ¬ est in History of Dominion Turf No Purse JLess Than 700 and No Saliva SalivaTests Tests A1 though Veterinary Surgeon SurgeonWill Will Inspect Horses WINDSOR Ont May 4 An early start will be made in thoroughbred racing for On ¬ tario when Kenilworth Park tomorrow after ¬ noon throws its gates open for its initial meeting of the 1934 season In fact it will be the earliest start ever made in any year in the history of the Canadian turf turfThe The weather in Windsor at the present is of the summer variety quite as hot as it is during the month of June The track is lightning fast the workouts during the past week permitting owners to give their charges much desired work for the racing days io follow There are xnorethan 375 horses stabled at the popular Windsor track while thirty or more riders have registered with the cus ¬ todian of the jockey room roomDuring During the seven days racing 36500 will be distributed in overnight purses and han ¬ dicaps of an average daily distribution in excess of 5300 This is the most liberal distribution at this season of any track in the country with the exception of Pimlico No purse will be less than 700 while 1000 handicaps will feature the daily program programAn An attractive card is scheduled for the inaugural tomorrow The leading event will be the 1000 Ontario Handicap at seven eighths of a mile for Canadianfoaled horses There are twelve nominations H C Hatch has made three entries Pensweep Easter Hatter and Sweepstaff and there are two scheduled to carry the E F Seagram colors Shady Well and Irish Kid Mrs D S Renauds Carhan Queen Hon Donat Ray ¬ monds Crofter and Dr C N Mooneys Syn ¬ dic are among the probable starters M Butch Keeling of hockey fame has Lady Marnock The Mountain Rose Stable has Bethankful Irvine Bruce has Battle Plane and the Mayfair Stable has Gaffing in the fashionables party composing the fifth race on Saturdays card Experienced officials will occupy the key positions in the judicial and administrative department at Kenilworth W R Norvell the racing secretary of the Orpen plant will officiate as usual as presiding steward while the judges will embrace P E Cailen and D A Boyle Thomas Clark who handled the barrier with conspicuous success last season at the Toronto and Windsor tracks will dispatch the horses during the coming week A Simms succeeds Benny Jacobs as clerk of the scales the latters ill health preventing him from continuing in the posi ¬ tion he so creditably filled for many years W G Kelly is back in his old place as the paddock and patrol judge Vern De Geer and F W Mossop are the official timers George W Hay assistant to the president A M Orpen is back in his customary posi ¬ tion as chief of administration at the track Dr D St John Wigle is the track physician and E Allen the general superintendent of the racing plant Eddie Pollard is custodian of the jockeys room roomThe The newly created position is that of vet ¬ erinary surgeon to be expertly filled by Dr J E Melhuish the distinguished graduate of the Ontario Veterinary college at Guelph He is the accredited veterinary surgeon to the department of agriculture health of ani ¬ mals branch in Canada There will be no saliva tests at Kenilworth as Dr Melhuish and other experienced veterinary surgeons declare such tests unreliable unreliableThe The Canadian surgeon will be on duty in the paddock at Kenilworth at all times dur ¬ ing the racing period It will be his business to inspect any or all thoroughbreds for possi ¬ ble traces of stimulations if he deems such procedure necessary He will report his findings to the stewards for their action in any case coming to his attention attentionIn In the mutuel betting at Kenilworth Can ¬ adian and United States money will be ac ¬ cepted at any selling wicket At the pay ¬ off booths holders of winning tickets will be paid off in American or Canadian money as they desire desireThe The first race is at 230 p m Standard time
